My son loves Anime & we are actually going to be going to the convention in NYC in Dec, looking forward to it & I really can not wait too. There are alot of good soap opera like cartoons series that end in like 26 episodes..The one that he is into now is called Ghost Story, a little bit adult but he is 13 & watches the same crap on TV. He started out when he was very young with Saior Moon & it grew from there. We also like Case Closed which is not as sexy as some of the other anime..Negima was great & Fruits Basket was very funny weird but funny. Come on Pat give it another try.

Like with everything else, there's a wide variety of anime. Horror stories, love stories, action stories, historical stories, etc. The problem is that most people who aren't into anime just know fight anime like Dragon Ball, so they don't look at the brilliant works of Miyazaki, Shiro, or Otomo.

What, are you too good for YouTube?
Anime is something I could never get into. Most of it was either too expansive (some of these damn things have been running for 2-3 decades) or redundant. That said, Cowboy Bebop is one fo the collest TV shows I've ever seen. Thank God it's only 1 movie and 25 episodes. Get in, get it done, get out.

No, I can't bring myself to being around people who play seriousness into anime characters. My friend and his brother might go, but who knows.

Ghost in the Shell has two movies and two seasons (with a third coming soon) of the tv show with 26 episodes each.
If you go into the manga, there's been two series and a novel or two, but they are heavily technical because Masamune Shiro is really into technology and likes to really get in detail with it in his writings and illustrations.

my buddies is a super computer nerd and wrote a book very close to ghost in the shell as far as the technical issues and i felt i was up to the level he was at

Way back when I did shipping and receiving for Eclipse, we distibuted Appleseed by Masamune Shirow (I think). I got all the damaged books I wanted, so I had the whole series. I thought they were pretty cool, even though I was more into the domestic horror titles.
Years later, my roomates and I rented some anime flick called where chicks were constantly getting raped by gigantic alien cocks. It was the same flick that was sampled on White Zombie's Welcome To Planet Motherfucker. I haven't watched an anime flick since.

Ironic that I post this for you, pat, since CB is another piece of pop culture that's very much a western not set in the "usual" western time periods.

No, that's film noir. I really don't understand how you keep mixing up film noir and westerns. Outside of the blurring of good and evil, they're radically different genres.
That show Firefly or Serenity or whatever it was called was very much a sci-fi western.

and a movie with a horse isnt necessarily a western
but westerns as a class of movies have horses and come from a specific time period where horses are the main source of transit for the average person

No. Most westerns are indeed set in times when horses are the main mode of transportation, but that does not mean ALL westerns are dictated by the superficial detail. The key to a "western" as it's been come to known are wandering individuals who straddle the line of "good and evil" in a massive and often dangerous frontier.
