Since my dad is a huge Bob Newhart fan, I burned the Unmasked show onto a cd for him to listen to while in the hospital yesterday (he got a stent... non medicated). Dad has never heard Ron Bennington before. After listening to it, he said, "That interviewer, who was great, by the way, had a very familiar laugh".
He went on to bring up a single episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show from 1961, "Empress Carlotta's Necklace". In it, Gavin MacLeod played a jewelry salesman and Mel Cooley's cousin. He said that the character that MacLeod played, had the EXACT same laugh as Ron. He said it was like they were both taught the same laugh.
I've searched online and can't find any clips of the episode. It's from season season one. If anyone has the season one box set, PLEASE see if you can post it. I'd love to hear this!

He's 78, so let's just say it's a "selective" memory.
Gavin MacLeod played a jewelry salesman and Mel Cooley's cousin.
Gavin MacLeod's most disturbing role.

OK. Finally got to compare the two sound clips. My dad is a bit off by saying it's "exactly the same laugh", but damn... To think that he could connect two so obscure (less than two minute) peaces of sound, that occurred 46 years apart, is pretty freaking wild!
Click here to watch 'Maxwell-Cooley-laugh-on-VanDyke-show' (http://media.putfile.com/Maxwell-Cooley-laugh-on-VanDyke-show)
Click here to watch 'Rons-laugh-on-NewhartUnmasked' (http://media.putfile.com/Rons-laugh-on-NewhartUnmasked)
BTW... Ignore the "to watch" part. It's just sound files.

my Dad(80) is the same way it's uncanny yet gives me hope for immortality. He remembers things from 45 years ago yet forgets what day it is.
that's great, glad you could find a longer clip with the laugh
you're right it's not exact, but being able to place it that close after all these years is pretty amazing
