The Winter Festival is upon us and with it comes the Winter Festival tips. I've been taking mixed martial arts classes for the last 5 months. Do I give my Sensei and the people that work there tips? I go there like 5-6 days a week and these people have helped me a great deal. If you are a personal trainer do you get tips? Whats the protocol?

not sure of protocol but if you feel like the training you've received is worth giving them extra cash im sure they wont mind

wow, great fucking question!
I would say not to tipping him. simply because that would lower him to doorman status. you didn't tip teachers in school, therefore you shouldn't tip him.

If you get a happy ending then by all means, do what feels right to you.

If it's a "real" place then no, if it's one of those places that promises you a black belt within x amount of months/year then yes. Back when I studied if I ever tipped my Sifu or Sigung they would have taken it as an insult. That being said, you can make an offering to the school if you wish, I've done that, either bought equipment that we needed or gave cash to help cover costs. It depends, if this is a slick studio with televisions in the corner absolutely not, but in my case we rented the top floor of an old farmer's meeting house that had no heat or A/C and obviously no equipment, so I offered th help the school.

Like said above, you don't tip him if it's a real school. If the school does a holiday party, you can bring the sensei a bottle of wine and thank him.
