View Full Version : Did Bubba the Love Sponge go too far?

Last week, the day before Thanksgiving, Bubba the Love Sponge went off on a brief but vicious tirade against a caller, going so far as to use a racial slur against him (repeatedly). It's a rant that have some asking if Bubba went too far, even on "uncensored" satellite radio.
The segment (audio of which can be heard below) involves a Hispanic caller named Will who called in to complain about an issue involving two illlegal immigrants and a shooting.
It's hard to say whether or not Bubba actually went "too far" in this situation (it's obviously a matter of your own opinion). On both Sirius and XM, racially charged jokes aren't necessarily a rare occurrence - but they're almost never directed at someone with any level of virulence.

agreed. Even worse than an old white man in a cowboy hat quoting a Spike Lee movie.
This was a media professional, well aware of the current climate, who chose, although in a heated moment, chose to use a racial epithet thrice, directly to a specific person whom he knew to be hispanic, not to mention any other listeners of hispanic or latin heritage. who may also have been offended.
Theyre gonna have to address this.

How can anyone say he went too far? He didn't call the guy a "beaner", he called the people in the story one.
This won't go anywhere, the hispanics don't have the fake leader the blacks seem to.

this is as bad, if not worse, than the imus situation
but he's such a low profile, no one will really care
if it did pop, and he got fired, would he get the same support imus did ...?

Listen again. He called the caller a spic twice. The deafening silence at the end is telling.

How is the deafening silence any different from a normal reaction to him?

He shouldn't. He wasn't trying to be funny. He was clearly trying to attack and offend. That was the clear intent. Not that I would campaign for him to get fired, I couldn't care less, but I wouldn't support something like that either.
How is the deafening silence any different from a normal reaction to him?
Good point sir. Good point.

typical punk ass.
There is such a difference between Imus/Doghouse/O&A and Bubba in this case.
In the case of Imus, it was an old man using words that he clearly didn't understand...but trying to be funny.
In the case of Doghouse, it was the case of unfunny people using words inappropriately...but trying to be funny.
In the case of O&A, it was the case of a guest homeless man, trying to be funny.
In the case of Bubba, it was the case of a man using words to be purposefully hurtful.
That being said, I don't think Sirius should fire him for that...they should just fire him for not being funny.
I do have a question about this one though, with all of the PAC talk on this site and others...is this a case that they would support?

i think based on what htg has said previously, that pac would support his right to say it, even if disagreeing with what he said.

He may have gone too far for me, but I'm not upset because I didn't hear it or intend on listening to the link. And if I had been listening, I may have gotten upset, and changed the channel. Which is what you should do to Bubba whether he is using racist language, or just being the douche he is.

Bubba the love sponge, that's a funny name. I don't think it was that bad. Yeah he did it in anger, and yeah it was racist, but he could make the case he felt the guy was being racist for defending criminals because they were of his same race and that he was returning the racism to show how ignorant he sounded.
PAC it up.

I wonder what that jerkoff Stern will have to say about this.
he was so outraged at what Imus said so I wonder how he'll feel that his butt-buddy now topped Imus ( excepting that maybe only 10 people heard Bubba until the audio was posted here ).
But hey I think Stern invented racially insensetive humor.

For starters, how the hell can anyone listen to that show? All they do is talk over each other and try to curse like a bunch of fifth graders showing how cool they are because they can say "fuck."
Although the guy sounds like an asshole, I am 100% AGAINST this guy being penalized or censored in any way. It's bullshit when it happens to O&A, Imus, or anyone else, and it would be bullshit if it happens to him. Of course, it's "different" here since he wasn't making a joke; he was saying it [alleged] anger. Yeah, it offends me, but so what. I just don't listen to it. If enough people did the same, the free market would take care of this on its own.
O&A have talked about stuff that made me nauseas while I'm eating breakfast. Should they be sanctioned? Did I complain? Fuck no!! I just turn the channel - just because I don't like it, someone else probably does. Who am I to say where the line is to be drawn.
For those who want to discipline Bubba, keep in mind that there a bunch of people in this country that are offended by R&F making racial or homosexual jokes. Yes, I know you can distinguish that from what Bubba said and how he said it. But guess what, you're now on the slippery slope to having R&F off the air or at least totally changing their show. The complainers in our society know that incrementalism is the key. To get something banned in our society, you don't immediately go after your real goal. You start with the most egregious example and go after that. Gradually, you keep chipping away until everything is banned. People won't complain because what Bubba said, or how he said it, is "different" from what Imus said. Therefore, it's okay to discipline Bubba. It amazes me that anyone who was upset about O&A and Imus being penalized are willing to condemn Bubba.
