View Full Version : What happened to the usefulness of super glue?

Back in the day, super glue was great. You could glue almost anything to anything. For the past several years, it seams like it only works about for about a third of the things for which I try to use it.

Did the glue get worse, or are products being manufactured out of new materials that the glue doesn't "like"? I think it's the glue itself. Shit... I hardly ever even get my fingers stuck together, when trying to use it, like in the good old days.

I'm becoming a grumpy old man. I hope The Blowhard reads this.

I don't remember super glue ever having that bonus. You're thinking about model airplane glue.

super glue super (http://science.howstuffworks.com/question695.htm)

Another interesting application is the use of cyanoacrylate to close wounds in place of stitches. Researchers found that by changing the type of alcohol in super glue, from ethyl or methyl alcohol to butyl or octyl, the compound becomes less toxic to tissue. With further research, the practice may become more widespread and could eventually replace the need for stitching up lacerations.

i was just bsing but apparently i was correct

Listen, PapaBear. When you were young and slim, it was easy to glue yourself to an I-beam by your hard hat. Now that you're fat and old, it doesn't work so well.

Nope. Not the white glues. They were alway fairly benign. Totally different type of glue. And that thing about using nail polish remover to get your fingers unstuck... most of them don't have the acetone anymore.

Shouldn't I just be able to use more glue? Actually, I thought about posting that photo, but the commercial always freaked out my acrophobic self.

More glue doesn't work. You would need more surface to surface contact.

I've got plenty of surface. Maybe I should just lose the hard hat.

they are using glue a lot more now...but when the cut opens up because they should have used stiches it is quite painful, messy, and then has to be either glued again or stiched up...I prefer the stiches the first time

To super glue's credit... the one good use I get, is a dab on the end of my fingertips, when I get tiny cuts. I get little cuts when I work on the inside of computers. A tiny cut like that can be a real pain in the ass. Well... fingers. Not ass. Anyway... super glue does the trick.

I caught an elbow right over my eye and the glue wore off before the healing had even started while I was asleep. Waking up covered in blood is confusing, but then I realized that it was getting worse because of the way I was sleeping and my skin had torn a bit more...so that was the part that hurt. I got stiches after that.

The collective bargaining agreement of 1992 made it illegal to glue construction worker's hard-hats to girders and then lift them "to a height equal to, or in excess of, their body length". Without those hijinks to look forward to, the glue makers just lost the will to live.

that gorilla glue works really good on wood repairs, and pvc glue works really good on coating your fingers, after which little pieces of the glue collect in your pubes when you finally get your handskin saturated enough in the shower for the glue to be scrubbed off.

The krazy glue for cracked finger during the winter was recommended to me by the dermatologist. It keeps the skin close together and speeds healing. I still do that during the winter when my finger dry and crack
