I have a student with Cerebal Palsy. He also has a dream of being a club dj. Because he is on Medicade, and has to spend the money given to him or else it goes to waste, he has money to buy equipment. He does not know where to go to get the stuff, or exactly what he needs. I dont know either.
Any ideas? Help make his dream come true

If he wants to be a club DJ, he needs to learn CD decks, as that's basically what anyone uses now.

not to be an a-hole, but wouldn't using medicaid money for non-medical-related items be unethical and perhaps fraudulent?
at any rate, 2 tec-12's and a good multi-channel mixer would be my choice.

Pioneer CDJ 1000's are the standard. You can use cd's and adjust speed and scratch like a record player.
As for a mixer I would get a Pioneer DJM600
Sam Ash or B&H are good places to shop.

Well, I've been DJing since My FreshMan Year in High School, which is a bit more than 15 years this year. I went another route and started making beats and then records but I can still get mean on some tables. AnyHow.....
If You're in New York.....I'd go to Sam Ash on 48th Street, right off of BroadWay and or Manny's Music, which is right next to Sam Ash. There's also a spot on 30th Street called Rogue Music that sells used (But, In Great condition) equipment at a much better price, that way You can get more if You chose to.
Turntables are a standard (Technic 1200's) but Pioneer CDJ 1000's became a great tool about 3-4 years ago because You can get accurate scratches and true touch manuvers with them. But, what's even more up to date, fun and PROVEN (meaning it's been out for alittle bit and there have been great results so far) is SERATO.
Serato allows You to connect Your computer to Your turntables or CDJs (Which You do need for this program) and play/scratch/manipulate your music files. So, There are no need for CDs or Vinyl. If Your itunes has 30,000 songs, then You can play a 30,000 song set party.
Then, All else is also pretty standard, A DJ Mixer (Vestax & Rane make great ones), a good amplifier, a pair of speakers.
Then, If You want to get more advanced check out some computer programs like Ableton Live, which You can set up whole DJ sets on and manipulate the eq, tones, put effects on, etc....
Modern Technology is getting pretty Ill
I Hope that helps

That is fantastic! I think he just needs the bare basics though. it will be years till he even developes the coordination to master everything. (he's confined to a wheelchair and his hands dont work that well. still, if gives him a goal, and thats the important thing)
What would the bare minimum of stuff be, just a turntable, mixer, and speakers?

For the bare minimum I'd get 2 turntables, a DJ Mixer, an amp and speakers or a pair of powered monitors (basiclly, speakers with the amp built in). That said, the bare minimum also includes vinyl to put on those turntables and or CDs to put in the CDJs, and that's why I suggest Serato because You could download lots of stuff especially alot of old/classic stuff that aren't being pressed on vinyl nowadays.
This is a quick YouTube video I just found. I'm sure there are better ones but this seems to be a good example.
