View Full Version : The Al Dukes Anti-Listening Thread Thread

OK. I'm late at this, and I'm surprised no one did this already.
On Friday, Al mentioned that the listening threads are killing the message boards. He made a good argument. I'm sure the Admins of the various boards might have a problem with it, though. The listening threads do make things easier for the people who are listening live, and more threads means more required data space. But Al might actually be right. The chat room might be better than a listening thread, but some people don't do chat rooms (I'm one).
What's your take on it?
Hey, Al... Your phone call got a thread!

Who really cares? I would do them more if I wasn't working during the show. I'm just glad I can listen most of the times. To each his own people. Al just can't type so he's a hater....and thinks Rielly's a cunt.

The listening thread really brought me into posting at ronfez.net. Only a few of my friends have xm and they also dont live in this state. So barring a phone call its hard to discuss whats going on during the show with those who appreciate it. Also I do think that some of the things that are brought up in the listening thread will turn into larger threads and some things that might have become threads that shouldn't be dont because they are shot down in the listening thread. The bad thing about chat rooms is that once you leave all of the things discussed are gone and not recorded. In the reply style thread that is the listening thread no comment goes unnoticed if you do not want it to. Viva Listening Threads.

I picked "on the fence".
I agree with what you said about not being able to go back to the thread, as opposed to the chat room, but Ron mentioned a problem that causes. He said that execs read some of the posts in the listening threads, and doubt if studio guest appearances worked out.
Fucking execs, don't get the fact that there are people who don't want to hear anyone who isn't Ron or Fez.
I just realized some irony with that, though. Al Dukes is the guy who thinks that interviews make for bad radio.

and thats not 100 percent true sometimes ronnie has an excellent interview and it shows in the board. I was on the road for the Lou Dobbs thing and I thought that was great and I think ron was happy because he had someone at his level that he could talk to. That said some of the people that are interviewed are terrible...but Shirley Phelps-Roeper should be third mic.

I think ALL of the interviews are good. Even when it's a "bad" interview, they turn it into more fun once it's over. I just think it's funny that Al said that the listening thread is bad for the message boards, but Ron said that the one bad thing about them was how it effected the feedback about celebrity interviews... and Al doesn't think celebrity interviews are good in the first place.
Weird, wacky stuff....

Shut up PB!! My publicist read this and he's pissed about all your doom and gloom!
Seriously, I doubt HIGHLY that any publicist worth his salt would truly get all pissed off bc of listening threads! It probably happened once and is mostly a running joke. If it does really happen a lot, some people (publicists) need to be fired. If I had something to promote I'd love people to be talking about it all over countless boards and more. And to not realize that some people will cry about anything makes that person an ass.

I'm just referring to what Ron said.

Publicists need to realize the web is a dark disgusting place.

Wow. I can't believe I didn't notice this earlier.
I would think that the people who post in the listening threads care. You don't post in the listening thread for the same reason I don't. We aren't online or listening at the time. But a lot of people do. That's no reason to respond with "Who really cares".

I will live and die with my beloved listening threads. It's a great place to comment in real time about what's going on, or often something completly different from what's going on. There are plenty of threads that come up during or after the show. Maybe not a thread about every single little topic or fart that happened on the show. Sometimes we just roll with it. There are always some great lines going back and forth. If I can't get to the phone, I just throw a line out in the thread. It's also cool just hanging with the usual bunch of idiots in the thread. Makes the day fly by.

I enjoy the listening thread and post often in them. As far as his complaint that they deplete the thread topics. I would not be able to comment. I have always lived in a listening thread world. Do we really lack from enough threads? Im not complaining about the amount, quality sometimes though.

I have posted this on other boards but hey I am bored at work so I might as well post it here too.
listening threads in my opinion do both. I agree completely that less threads are started because of them. before there was such a thing people would post more topics.
I also disagree with him. listening threads have done a lot to help the boards. I know of a lot of people that when they first started posting only post in them, its got more of a casual feel to it I guess if that's the right word.
As for what you were saying about data and stuff I don't think the admins care. any good board has more than enough to ever have to worry about it.
also if you notice at the bottom of the page is an alexa rating thing. to me that means that RF.net is proud of their ranking. one major factor in that is the amount of time vistors stay when visiting. So would you rather have 30 people visit for 10 minutes to post replies or 30 people staying for a 3 hour listening thread?

So you brought up something I dont know about. Can you explain said Alexa thingy?
I figured it was view count but its more than that?
Thanks

I can't see the thing since I am on mobile, but alexa is a website that ranks other websites. so whatever number you see there should be the ranking of RF.net compared to any other website on the internet. someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that's what is at the bottom, I know that's what alexa is

Al is off-base. If there is a topic brought up on the show that is worth it's salt, it will get it's own thread. Otherwise, comments in the listening thread will cover it. Using the listening thread has cut down on the "Who Cares" threads significantly (IMO).
A daily show rundown might be nice, but I know I don't have the time to write one. Plus Kathleen's Blog essentially does that.
