To answer what Mike does/did

High School Teaching: 10 years teaching Introductory Science; Physical Science; Biology; Chemistry; Water Chem. My last high school teaching gig was at The Marine Academy of Science and Technology on Sandy Hook; meaning I took kids out on the ocean on our research vessel.

College: Taught at Monmouth U when it was Monmouth College in NJ; I was a teaching lab assistant; I was that person who taught how to dissect the cat/pig/shark after the teacher left after lecture. Taught at Brookdale College also in NJ; Environmental Science a couple of years ago.

I'm out of the classroom and do two things mostly:

-Tutor kids who are homeschooled/ill/need tutoring for various reasons

-Grade Essays for ETS; the people who make the SATs, GREs, etc. Everything from High Schools That Work to NJ ASK to No Child Left Behind to Praxis for prospective teachers; ETS scans the essays and sends them to people like me to score.

A Master in Education and all that experience; so...

The first intermediate host, the terrestrial snail, eats the [cattle] feces, and becomes infected by the larval parasites. The larvae (or cercariae) drill through the wall of the gut and settle in its digestive tract, where they develop into a juvenile stage.

The second intermediate host, an ant, uses the trail of slime as a source of moisture. The ant then swallows a cyst loaded with hundreds of juvenile lancet flukes. The parasites enter the gut and then drift through its body.

One moves to the sub-esophageal ganglion. There, the fluke takes control of the ant's actions by manipulating these nerves. As evening approaches and the air cools, the infested ant is drawn away from other members of the colony and upward to the top of a blade of grass. Once there, it clamps its mandibles onto the top of the blade and stays there until dawn. Afterward, it goes back to its normal activity at the ant colony. If the host ant were to be subjected to the heat of the direct sun, it would die along with the parasite. Night after night, the ant goes back to the top of a blade of grass until a grazing animal comes along and eats the blade, upon which the lancet flukes will be back inside their host [cattle].

Let's see. My mom teaches second grade and doesn't break 30K. My mother in law taught for 35 years, got her masters and ended up in the 50s somewhere I think. I taught without a certificate as a permanent substitute in Westchester for about 800 a month.

You've been out of the classroom a little while so that fabulous rising tide of teacher salaries probably hasn't raised your boat...

I'll say 32K.
