im looking into getting one of these notebooks for school

Intel® Pentium® Dual Core T2310 (1.46GHz/533Mhz FSB/1MB cache), English
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 Dimm
14.1 inch screen
vista
120G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft® Office Home and Student 2007, English
Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

898 CDN + tax

im looking to get a somewhat inexpensive laptop, that will do all the things i'll need for school. internet, word, basic things..

is this computer alright? or is it a rip off for the price?

That should easily do all of the things you need. With 2 gigs of memory, it shouldn't be too slow. The price seems ok, with the inclusion of Office.

Go with Windows XP rather than Vista. I work with both systems regularly, and XP is simply a better OS (IMO).

You may want to speed up the processor a little bit too, depending on how long you plan on keeping the system.

If you can upgrade to Office Small Business that may be a good choice, but it depends on how you will be using it.

Overall a good system.

Is there any way to kick that processor speed up? An option or something? I'd want at least 2 Ghz of power personally.

I had a 1 gig until a few months ago, so I still see 1.45 gigs as being adequate. Maybe not in the future.

It sounds like a good computer for a good price

I would avoid Vista like the plague until the Service Packs are out. I had nothing but issues with it earlier this year and I rolled back the computer to XP.

Also, have you looked into the Vostro models? They don't have any of the bloatware that comes pre-loaded on Dell PC's.

I bought a Dell laptop that would easily take care of what you need for like 600 american dollars. You might wanna shave some of those options a bit if you dont wanna drop that much

Was that the 599 Vostro?

I think a good chunk of that price tag is the MS Office software.

You might want to get a CPU with a 667MHz bus. Otherwise, it looks like a decent productivity system.

I'm one of those rare "I don't hate Vista" people. I upgraded my (then) one year old laptop back in February. I had some sound and video driver issues for a little while, but once they finally got updated, everything worked fine. It's a new OS, so it takes some getting used to.

I bought a $3K+ top of the line Dell Inspiron; Intel Duo Core at close to 3.0Ghz; put in 4GB Ram; cleaned the drive; removed the crap-ware, and...

with Vista; it runs slower, significantly slower then my decade [?] old Dell 9100 w/ a single P4 and 2GB Memory.

I spoke to Dell about doing the backwards compatability to install XP and for that model; no dice, so, back it went back to Dell.

Great Laptops; but Vista is sloooooooooooooow...

amd athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 4400+ 2.30 ghz
2046mb ram

also just wanted to note, that i recently had a laptop with vista loaded on it and never had a single problem with anything, nor did i find it slow. also my new desktop has it and i havent had any issues.

I bought a gateway with vista back in January and hated everything about vista. I returned it and went back to my XP laptop. I wanted a new computer so I bought a HP with vista a couple of weeks ago. I was so worried that I was going to hate it and return it again. I dont know if they fixed some of the problems or what but I like it so much better now then I did before and I dont seem to have any problems with it. Learning were some things are takes time to get use to it because they moved some things on me. But its fast and works great.

My only problem is when im using peer guardian it goes on but it doesnt seem to be blockeing anything. Those of you who use peer guardian, you know when its on and its blocking shit it shows text in the box and shows a ton of it as its blocked. Well whenever I put it on now the box stays empty like nothing is going through it or blocking anything. Does anyone else with vista who uses peer guardian notice this?
