so this chick knocks on my door a couple months back and says shes selling magazines for her school or something. she was kinda hot so i listened to her speil and said ok. so i bought a book from her and gave her a check for $50. she gave me a receipt and said it would come in november.

i never got any magazines in the mail so i got my receipt and looked up the company online and the first thing i discovered was this (http://www.theindependent.com/stories/070701/new_fake07.html)

the company was a fake. i am out 50 bucks. not that i really care about 50 bucks, but still. i havent gotten any strange debits or a checks written that i didnt write so i dont think they got anything other that the initial 50 bucks.

but boy do i feel like an idiot. what should i do? go to the police? close my checking account? help me o great oracle!

I used to run a good scam like this when i was short on money in college

I purchased a roll of raffle tickets and would then go around the local neighborhoods saying i was selling tickets for a fraternity raffle and would get a good amount of money each time.................man that was sweet

Did you try calling any numbers on that receipt instead of googling "magazine fraud"?

If I was you I would file a report with the Better Business Bureau. It probably won't do anything, but at least you'll have some documentation created in case any weird charges appear somewhere down the line.

Call your bank, ask for the fraud department, and tell them what happened. Give them the check number so maybe they can challenge the bank it was cashed/deposited at and maybe get it back. You may not neccesarily need to change your account number, but if they suggest it to you and they'll do it at no charge it may be a good idea. The problem with that is that you have to change ALL your automatic bill pays like your car payment, PayPal account info, mortgage/rent etc, if it is taken out of your account by the company you have the account with.

Other then that, if the bank can't help you retrieve the money, you're SOL for the fifty bucks. Sorry dude, I hate seeing people get scammed when they think they are helping the poor and sick.
Next time, just send a check to the Salvation Army or United Way, and bypass potential scammers.

Yes, call the bank and have them do a stop payment on the check. They can do that, if you give them the check number.
