As a preface, I understand that Billy Staples has hit some tough times and that he no longer works in radio. And I also know it's Ron's show and he controls who comes and goes on the air. But Billy's call today during Al's call about Booker really, really burned me up.
They were having a pretty fair conversation about the Booker situation when Billy called in just to tool on Al, and it totally, completely backfired on him.
Billy started the call with a snide remark, and then started going off on Al about where his song parody was today. If you're not familar, Al usually does parody songs on the Boomer and Carton show on Wednesdays or Thursdays as a forward-look into the football games the next weekend.
However, Billy didn't see it that way. He started screaming about having a song parody today, and his point was "nobody wants to talk about last weekend's games on Wednesday."
And even though Al and Ron both told Billy that the songs are not reviews of what happened, but rather, previews of the games (or sporting events) the following weekend, Billy kept harping on it and didn't seem to get what was going on.
That's right - Billy wasn't getting the bit.
Even as someone who works in radio, I think Billy is also confused about the advantages he had working in R&F's timeslot back in the day opposed to working in morning radio. If Al was going to do a funny, tight, produced piece, he'd have to pull an all-nighter Sunday night for a Monday morning debut. That's not going to work, not by a long shot.
Billy, as a piece of advice, why don' t you listen for his next song parody and then call in to critique that, rather than calling in as soon as you hear Al's voice to profess sour grapes and sounding like a misinformed person.

You keep saying this, but what did Billy prove other than being a semi-funny goofus? I mean, ESD has consistently brought more to the show than Billy has. Dukes has totally evolved since his R&F days. Billy, if anything, has gone backwards. I know he's got issues, but I find it bad form for someone like Billy to call out someone who has gotten CONSISTENT laughs lately.
Yeah, Billy was good in 2001-2002. Brady Anderson had one good year too, doesn't mean he's going into the Hall of Fame.

That's just it. He wasn't any of those things calling in. And for a guy who claims to have so many ideas, it kind of annoys me that he's done NOTHING for the show. Billy wants to yell from the sidelines about someone who's actually doing something, well, I'm yelling from the sidelines at someone who's doing nothing.
You want to bash Earl? You want to bash Al? Back it up instead of falling back on past glories and a Christmas CD you produced over 2 years ago.
Sleeves, Mooch, Basatak, Dukes, and Perrynoid have all done more free production for R&F than Billy has done in the last year. And Billy, if you're making this an ego thing where you only get paid for your work, well, unfortunately, you are no longer in that position and you have to start working your way up again.

Right. At the very least, hasn't contributed recently. His only "contributions" has been picking on other producers and claiming how much better of a job he can do, yet does nothing and shows nothing to back it up. Al has made an effort to produce stuff, to call into the show and add something to the discussion at hand, and offered bits that he produced for other shows to Ron and Fez.
Billy, from my count, hasn't produced anything for the show in over 2 years yet has the cojones to call in and bash Al. I know it makes for good radio, but what gives him the right to bash someone, funny or not, when at least THEY DID SOMETHING. Billy hasn;t done shit, and his past glories to not entitle him to smash Dave, Earl, or Al because he was hot shit back in the day.

For what my opinion matters, and thats honestly nothing, I know that Billy's been really fucked up. Vertigo and other illnesses, whether self incurred or whatever,so his lack of production is somewhat exscused. You've got a point there, but that was more of a pile-on because everyone picked on Al, and there was also a girl involved there.
Compared to the shit that ESD and Earl have gotten on this board, the material I put out six years ago pales in comparison. All I did was simple slams and mimicking the Dukes drops that Ron had in his instant replay.
I have a certain appreciation now of how tough you have to be to work for R&F and other demanding hosts.
Al and I have come to an understanding six years after the fact. I like Al. He's a good guy, and he's worked hard to be where he is now. Given the fact that he now works for one of my mentors, there is a mutual respect I have for him.

Billy said himself that he's been getting better. And from the sound of it, he's got plenty of free time to do stuff. It's not like he has a full time job, a wife, and a life to keep him busy. If anything, his issues should give him more free time to do production, so it's not excused.
I don't have a vendetta against Billy and trust me, I'm not Al Dukes in disguise. As I said, what upsets me about this thing is that Billy has shown a bunch of times that he has an inflated sense of self-importance. And as someone who gets pissed off at the threads directed at people on the show who get abuse when they don't deserve it, the very fact that Billy started going after Al for no reason whatsoever outside of the fact that Billy doesn't like Al is just awful.
Billy was trying to "get" Al, when the problem was, Billy let his dislike of Al cloud his judgment and attacked him for no good or fair reason.

Well, he doesn't work for the show, doesn't have anyone paying him to do production, and likely doesn't have access to production equipment (yeah, sure, he could probably obtain a copy of Cool Edit Pro through questionable means, and do production on a PC, but still...), so I'm not sure why anyone would expect him to be doing production.

...because he's been bashing other producers while claiming he can do a better job. There in lies the problem. It's not so much that he's not producing, it's that he claims he can produce but he's doing nothing to show for it.
Mooch, Basatak, Perry, and others don't work for the show and all have turned in pieces of varying quality. And it's not that hard to put together a song parody. The hardest part is writing it, not producing it.
I can understand Billy picking on Earl for doing nothing. But it really pissed me off to hear Billy go off on Al when it's totally and completely undeserved.

I see it differently. For one, I love to hear Al and Billy bicker. Here's a great example from earlier this year. (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=3164) Second, I think the fact that Billy spent 2+ years producing for the show and, yes, did do parody songs during that time and afterwards (and had a partnership that was created solely to create parody songs), is enough for him to fight with Al on this issue if he wants to. Has he done much on the parody song front lately? Not so much. He's had his setback and focused on other things (shameless plug - http://dowjokesreport.com). To say that Billy hasn't earned the right to criticize Al seems silly to me.

You're getting a mixed message. I never badmouthed Billy's abilities behind the scenes. He was a very good call screener. What we are talking about is comedy bits for the show. Two different things.
Ron's also advocated beating up 9-year-olds. Doesn't mean I'm going to go to an elementary school and start kicking ass.

I'm all for Al and Billy bickering. It is good stuff. But for Billy just to be so blatantly wrong, and again, picking on Al with almost zero knowledge of how Al's bit works on WFAN just screams sour grapes and re-inforces how pathetic Billy has gotten lately.
Did Billy earn the right to criticize Al? Yes. Back in 2002. Has Billy maintained that right? No. It's kind of like this:
Let's say there was a rookie in the Orioles organization when Brady Anderson had his big 2 years. The rookie was batting about 220 and just stinking up the joint. Slowly but surely, the rookie grew and became a solid Major Leauge player, hitting 290/25/95. Brady Anderson is now out of baseball after having two good years. Does Brady have a right to come back and yell at the solid player about how he couldn't hit a slider?
Billy said he was putting together material for a parody song, but when put on the spot by Ron during the show, he failed. Billy is scrambling just to go after Al, when he's failing to realize that Al's passed him by and it REALLY pisses off Billy.
Just as a question, how many parody songs did Billy actually produce for R&F that made air? I know that Al's done one a week since the first week of October.

As for the first part, I feel he would only need a few days of work to get his chops back.
So let's put the challenge out there. Let's ask Billy to produce one new piece for Ron and Fez to debut when they get back from vacation. Maybe a 2007 year in a review. Kind of like "We Didn't Start the Fire" or something.
Prove me wrong. Show us you're better than Al.
(this is where the photoshop is of Billy in his sweatshirt on top of the stairs of the museum in Philadelphia.)
I'm serious. Back your bravado up. You want to talk smack to someone about producing a radio show, why not show some production from the past five years. Medical setback or not (and who knows how much of that is real and how much of that is a continuation of Billy's past medical issues/lies) he sounded coherent enough to make a phone call and bash Al, so he's coherent enough to attempt a song parody.
Hell, even *I* did some production for a radio show in the past few months. It wasn't great, but it made the hosts laugh, so that's good enough for me.

We're all fucked up on the show; that's what makes the show different from anything else in the Radiosphere.
Fez is fucked up, so is ESD, so is Earl, Pitz, Lilly, the rest of the staff. And all of the callers, and guests, and Ron is Definately fucked up for having anything to do with all of this, and that's the magic, that's the difference, thats why we are here, thats why we listen to Ron and Fez.
I dont want regular radio. I want trainwrecks. I want screaming and crying. I want Earl to piss Ron off; I want a guest to piss Ron off. I want dead-air that gets people sent home before the show even begins. I want callers who dont get the bit. I want to equipment not to work. I want to hear cowbells flying. I want Billy to call in at just the wrong moment and say the wrong thing at the worst possible time. I want the opening song to be wrong. I want dave to discuss something and get it 100% wrong. I love it all.
