WASHINGTON — The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States.

"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us,'' long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means said.

A delegation of Lakota leaders has delivered a message to the State Department, and said they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the U.S., some of them more than 150 years old. (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,317548,00.html)

Considering the desperate poverty that Pine Ridge has suffered under ever since it was established, and considering these treaties began as a result of the massacre of the Lakota's women and children at Wounded Knee and Red Cloud's over-riding desire for saving his people, I have no problem with seeing why they would want to renounce their forced citizenship which has done jack dick for them since.

I am not exaggerating when I say that their reservation in South Dakota is the poorest country in America. Think eternal servings of pea soup. You gotta be fucking dirt poor to rival Camden's poverty.

Besides, they detest us wasichus for the most part to this day. They're very cool people to know but initially they are intimidating- and lots of bad shit does take place there if you're stupid. They also fucking hate that Costner movie- they refer to anyone they dislike as "dances with wolves" or "custer".

Friend of mine, before he befriended them, was chilling in a sweat lodge and this one big guy leaned over to him and whispered "Hey Custer, this is gonna be your last night on earth." Sat there staring at my friend the next few hours they sat there, thumbing his blade. Later the fella had too much of the sweat lodge and was puking...nodding all the while at my friend with respect.

I don't know many fellas who go through the trouble to know about them these days, let alone visit their reservation. Not that visitors are ever very welcome there anyway...
