View Full Version : We have no heat.

Liz and I just got back from Phoenix, where the weather was right around 60 degrees. We get back here, and it's 17 degrees. Lovely.
We get back to our apartment, and it's frigid, even though I left the heat on at 55 degrees.
Heat's broken, house is an igloo, and all we got is one space heater for the bedroom and I'm not sure if that'll hold out.
We have the oven on too. But this is not a good situation.

That really sucks. You should go get a hotel room.

yeah...a hotel room or head to home depot right now and stock up on some space heaters. once the heat works again, just return them. seriously.

Im with them, and I and sure you are not a fan of using the oven for heat but you have to not do that.

Look on the bright side. You are still a tenant. You bitch to the super, tough it out for the night and it will be ok in a day.
Wait until you buy your "dream house". The furnace dies in the middle of the night. You are gonna have to drop 4K for a new one.
Food for thought, my friend.

Landlord is a management company that won't be in til the morning.
I also know the maintenance guy, and I'm not going to grab him at 10pm when it's 10 degrees outside and the stuff he has to work on is shrouded in total Earl-ness.
Did you check the pilot light on your furnace? And next time you go away, leave the heat at 62. 55 is way too cold.

Also good about being in an apartment is you don't have to worry about the pipes freezing
Bulldogcakes
01-03-2008, 06:01 PM
I'm guessing your pipes burst. Sucks. That happened to me the first year I moved into my condo. A plumber or the super should have you up and running by tomorrow, though. Its usually not a big job.
If you're planning on heading to Home Depot for some heaters, do yourself a favor and spend the extra $$ on the safer models. The cheap ones are notorious for starting fires and usually don't work that well.

i still think you should go out and get a space heater for the night. bdc is right. dont get a cheap one.

I would not use the oven to heat the apartment!! It will burn all the oxygen in the air and you could get Co2 poisoning. Serious! It almost happened to me! I fell asleep wit the oven on and the door open and after a few hours, my detector went off and I could barely stand up to open the window. Better to be cold then dead! Just snuggle under as many blankets as you can get and use body heat.

4 g's? I had no idea they're so expensive. Is that gas or oil? My hot water heater went last year and I replaced it with one from Home Depot. I think it was around $800-1,000 total.

Oil is usually more than gas for a new system, because of the oil tank. Get gas.
(I work for the gas company heheheheh)

oil
Damn. Next time I buy a house, first thing I'm doing is checking the gas/oil and water heaters. Thats 5 grand between the 2 of them. I think gas is even more expensive to replace (or so they say on the Oil heat commercials).

Hmmmm. . . . . . I want a second opinion.
Actually, Gas may be more expensive to set up from scratch. You need the copper piping all over the house. If youre already set up, then I guess its less.

Local home depots are closed. We DO have hot water. But there's no power going to the heating system. Fans don't go on, nothing. Fuse might have blown.

Well, you use your gas oven to cook your cakes, right? How often does it break down?
Ever hear of anyone with an oil oven?

Well, we got through the night. I'm scheduled to work from home today, although I'm not sure how long I'll last here. I'm calling the management company as soon as they open. If they can't get me proper resolution soon, I'll go buy another space heater.

The maintenance guy came by; apparently something was wrong with the door of the heating deal blah blah blah.
Long story short, heat's back on and the apartment is warm again. But man alive, that sucked for a while.
"Why didn't you call me last night?" he asked.
"It was 10pm and 10 degrees out. I wasn't going to drag you out of your house for something like that."
This led to a lecture from him that all tenants are entitled to heat, blah blah blah.

glad to hear that you are warm again, and he'll remember that you dont call him unless its bad, and when you do call, he'll do everything he can to remedy situation.

I agree with the maintenance guy...
You pay them to have that service. Use it next time, Mr Nice Guy!

I'm going to go so far as to say that's the first time anyone has ever referred to Matty that way.
And I'm glad you've got heat again.
