Hey Buddays!

A couple months ago we all sent our congratulated Beerbandit and his wife on the birth of their first Child. The Babybandit was born with a congenital heart defect, called Atrioventricular Septal Defect, which prevents normal blood circulations through her heart and can cause heart failure. On Monday, January 14th, she will be having surgery to correct this defect. So please pass along good luck wishes, prayers, and any kind words here.

Thanks!

I don't even know you, and my heart goes out to you. Unfortunately, speaking from experience, this is one of the hardest things you will ever go through. Your family and friends are integral to you during these times. All the best.

AV Septal defect is a fairly common Heart developmental abnormality that occurs when the septum or wall between the chambers of the heart do not fully form properly. The septum usually closes normally on it own shortly after birth but if it does not surgery is performed to patch the wall. While not routine surgery, since it is on a child, it is very well performed and rarely ,if treated, leads to any problems. So good news is that it will likely be no big deal and the surgery is very "easy" The kid will live a normal life but need to premedicate

Thought s and prayers to the little bandit

Thanks everybody! The docs have been doing a great job of assuring us that everything will be great. It is a "fairly routine" procedure and she'll be at CHONY which is apparently top notch for pediatric surgery. And I do have a predominantly positive attitude towards it, but it's still fucking heart surgery, so there is a little anxiety to deal with. But the Bandits are all doing well. We just wish it was Monday so that we can get it done already and spend the rest of the week in her hospital room watching her recover.

Best Wishes Baby Bandit! My little guy had a "routine" operation at around the same age.
I will admit I was nerous, but everything worked out fine. If you have a good doctor, it will be ok.

Well, once again I want to thank everyone for their well wishes, unfortunately we'll have to put them on hold. When we left the hospital on Tues. after all of Lucy's pre-op tests were finished, the nurse reminded us that if she gets sick, we'd have to postpone the surgery. Wouldn't you know it she started coughing the next day and got steadily sicker as the week and weekend prggressed. We took her to the doc on Sat. and he gave a provisional clearance. No stuffy nose, no fever, she's good to go. That night she starts dripping like my bathroom sink, and we had to postpone the surgery this morning. We'll find out tomorrow when her next window is. We're hoping 7-10 days (at least that's what the nurse predicted.) Thanks all, and I'll keep you posted.

My thoughts and prayers go out to you. I have a friend who had to have the same type of surgery for his baby boy (10 months ago) and everything turned out fine.

I'm glad that there's another Beerbandit in the world and not another Hamburglar!

my son had to have a procedure in sept '06.
they had to put him under, and it only took 20 min for the procedure, and another 30 till they could bring him to us.
never want to go through that wait again.

i know exactly what you are going through BB (to an extent).

I just got off the phone with the Bandit and she's out of surgery and heading to ICU. The Surgery went well. I don't have any other details, but I do know that there's a long road ahead still. Keep her in your thoughts, and thank you on behalf of the Bandit Family for your kind words here.

This is one of the things that's truly important...not messageboard bickering and nonsense. I love the genuine care and concern we show for each other.

And I wish the BeerBandit family all the best during this time.

Hang in there brother.

I'm happy to report that Li'l Bandit is home from the hospital, and judging from the smiles that keep popping on her face, you'd never know she had heart surgery a little over a week ago. She's doing fantastic, and Mom and Dad are just glad to be home. Hospitals are not fun places, especially the PICU. The occasional kid screaming in agony, a patient waiting for a transplant of some sort not making it through the week, and the little girl in our room after we left the PICU was not well and very noisy. Not to mention that I had to watch the Superbowl at the hospital. Luckily the little girl's father was a Giants fan and I was able to sneak in 2 22s of Presidente Pilsner.

But the important part is that we are home and doing great. Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Excellent news Bandit! Glad to hear the little-one is recovering well.

PICU is not a really fun place. My daughter got a bad stomach virus around her first birthday and spent several days in PICU hooked up to IV and feeding tubes. I can understand your relief in leaving.

All the best to Lil' Bandit and your whole family!
