If you were a boy or girl.
First tell us your actual name and then, if you know, what the opposite gender name was going to be.
I ask this because after years of wanting to know mine and only getting the response "I wanted a girl so bad i didn't pick one" i actually got a non bullshit answer from my mom.
My name-Maria
My name if i was gonna be a boy-Michael

My real name is Brian.
If I had been born female, my mom was going to call me Melissa.
She later used that when she had her first daughter.

My mom said that when she was pregnant with my oldest brother(her first child) she wanted to name it Daria if it was a girl.
So i don't get why she didn't name me Daria....but those who know me know exactly why i am glad she did not.

My mother thought I would be a girl 100% because the pregnancy was so different then when she was pregnant with my brother. So she wanted to name me Dena. When I was born she was shocked I was a boy and it took her 3 days to pick a name.

My parents weren't very creative when naming their kids. My oldest brother is a junior (Matthew Luigi), I'm Joseph James, my sister is named after my mother and my younger brother is James Joseph. So I would have been Norah if I was a girl.
After my brother, my mother and father each promised their favorite uncle that the next boy would be named after him. My mother's uncle's name was James and my father's uncle's name was Joseph. Since my father wasn't their when they asked my mother for a name, she told the hospital that I was James Joseph, which is what's typed on my birth certificate. But my father used a pencil to cross out the two names and switch them so I became Joseph James.

My name is Ryan. I think that I was going to be Rachel or Rene. I'm not sure which.

If I was a boy, I would have been Dean or Seamus, thank God for my lack of penis.
When my mom found out I was a girl she picked Raven Ashley Quinn (my dad's last name), but for some reason the day I was born she changed her mind to Gwen Elizabeth Bradley, fuckin flake.
Heather 8

If I was a boy, I would have been Kristopher. The name was passed along to my younger brother.
My folks were also considering Bethany (after my dad's late baby sister) or Stephanie, which was the back-up girl's name for two of my brothers.
Parents thought that Ryan would be an original name at the time. I graduated with a class size of 140 and 6 them were Ryans.
Mom picked Heather because it was "unique." Remember, this is the 1970s; all throughout school there were always at least 3 other Heathers in the same class as me.

Don't know why "Eve" did not come up. So, I have to count my blessings.

I guess '79 to '85 but she basically just replaced one letter and gave me a name that hasn't been popular since the 1960's.

My name is Elizabeth Theresa. (Good, solid, Catholic name; my parents were CCD teachers at the time. They picked "Elizabeth" because of what it means and "Theresa" because it's my mom's middle name and her family didn't give middle names right off the bat, but Dad's family did.)
My parents kicked around the name "Matthew Timothy" for me, but I strongly suspect that I'd have ended up as a Junior (Gerald Thomas) . . . which is my brother's name.
According to my dad, they'd also kicked around the name "Bernadette" . . . but I'm not so sure that I buy that, either. I had a great grandmother and a great aunt named "Elizabeth" (who went by "Lil" and "Betty" respectively) so "Elizabeth" is also a family name. Lucky me.
One thing that sticks out about my brothers' names, though, that's really funny is that my mother SWEARS up-and-down that because her family has a ton of men named "John" or "Joseph" she'd never name her son either . . . and what name do we end up with for poor Sheepy? Joseph. (But, I don't blame Mom for that. That's God's fault. Just ask Dad.)

My name is Dan and I'm a boy. I was almost named Andrew. If I was a girl I think it was gonna be Jessica or Danielle.
I know my middle name is from my uncle / my dad's best friend who passed from cancer right around the time I was created.
My girlfriend is throwing her $.02 at us...She's a girl and her name is Melissa. If she was a boy with a penis, it would have been Nicholas Michael III.... Nicolena Michelle was thrown into the mix as well. Now she doesn't even have a middle name, it was traded in 1981 for J. Geils Band tickets.

That's only if you're Ashkenaz; it's considered poor form to name after the living. (Among other things; I used to know why, but I never bought the Telushkin book I borrowed from David before we took Yiddish. I think I might.)
If you're Sephardi (or, let me be a little more specific about this because I'm not so sure if it's true across the board in Sephardi communities, if you're Syrian Sephardi) you can name for the living. My friend Dit was raised Ashkenaz, but married a Syrian Sephard named Dave. She and her sister-in-law Miriam both named their first sons "Ralph" for Dave's dad Ralph. . . which is OK, because the kids both have different middle names.

And add 8 days to that and it's 3 weeks. . .that's practically a month. Your parents evidently thought they were doing the right thing by your family.
Besides, all y'all wait 8 days to name boys anyway, so what difference does it make how much earlier your uncle had died?

According to Nana, if my dad had been a girl, he'd have been named Geralyn. Either way, he was doomed. Nana had a devotion to St. Gerard Majella (http://www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=150).
Honestly, given the choice between the two feminine forms (Geraldine vs. Geralyn) I prefer Geraldine!

Not sure what my name would have been if I were a boy... probably something boring. But my parents originally thought "Mary Ellen" which makes me cringe. Then they thought Elizabeth Michelle ((since all my siblings have M as their middle initial)) but flipped it to Michelle Elizabeth so my initials would be the same as my dad. And "Shelle" was started by my oldest brother, which just stuck. As for Bink... :)

This is a slight twist, but my brother's story is much funnier than mine.
My parents asked me what I thought my new brother's name should be. After much thought, I came up with Obadiah Hairbrush.
Obadiah because my favorite book at the time was "Thy Friend, Obadiah" by Brinton Turkle; and Hairbrush because I had to come up with a middle name and I was having my hair brushed at the time. What do you expect; I was 3 at the time.
It worked for me, but my parents went with Mark Andrew instead.
