Are you confusing him with Affleck? Ledger never struck me as the guy who was taking paychecks. He took riskier roles. The only big "blockbuster" type movies he was a part of was the Patriot, which was strictly a Mel Gibson vehicle, "Knights Tale" which was his first big leading role, and Dark Knight, which was an esemble piece.

Couldn't be more wrong. His first American movie was 10 Things I Hate About You. The answer is: He can. The 12th Amendment states that anybody who is eligible for the presidency under Article II of the Constitution (a natural-born citizen age 35 or older) is eligible for the vice presidency. Clinton is a natural-born citizen over 35, so he qualifies. The putative roadblock to a Clinton vice presidency--the 22nd Amendment--doesn't apply. This hastily worded and passed amendment, designed to block another multi-multi-term presidency such as FDR's, only bars the election of a president to more than two terms in that office. It doesn't prevent a two-term president from running for the vice presidency.

(I stole that from The Slate, so whether it's accurate or not...)

I would make an argument that because Clinton cannot be president again because of the 22nd amendment, he is not eligible for the presidency.

If it's not an express prohibition, I think you can argue that it's a reasonable implication of the 22nd Amendment.

22 specifically precludes him from being elected president, not appointed. He can run for Vice. Moreover, he can serve as President, if needed. However, he would be prevented from running for re-election after his term is finished.

Judging by the hat that he's wearing I'll assume he just pulled his fingers from the asses of two overweight oil rig workers.

22 specifically precludes him from being elected president, not appointed. He can run for Vice. Moreover, he can serve as President, if needed. However, he would be prevented from running for re-election after his term is finished.

The issue turns on the meaning of "elected".

The issue isn't just the 22nd Amendment. If it was, you likely would be right.

However, you have to read the 22nd Amendment in conjunction with the eligiblilty of the vice president. If he's not eligible to be elected President under the 22nd Amendment, and eligibility to be President is the criteria for vice-presidency, then he's not eligible to be vice-president.

EDIT: Ultimately, the issue is open, and no court has ever been called upon to decide it, but I would be that if it was in front of a court, they would choose my interpretation.

basically, anyone eligible to be elected president can run for vp. he is not eligible to be elected president, ergo, he cannot run for vp. that's my reading of it. i assume i'm wrong.

i thought the issue turns on the meaning of "is".

The 12th Amendment only bars from the vice-presidency those persons who are "ineligible to the office" of President. Clinton is not ineligible to the office of president, however. He is only disqualified (by the 22nd Amendment) from being elected to that office.

I would argue that he is ineligible as a result of the 22nd Amendment.

Disqualification makes him ineligible.

I would argue that he is ineligible as a result of the 22nd Amendment.

Disqualification makes him ineligible.

But wouldn't you in fact be arguing for his disqualification based upon 12? Circular logic makes me dizzy.
