The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials, and it is unknown where on the planet it might come downhttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22857051/

Wasn't it Skylab that crashed to Earth in 1979, not Spacelab?
Either way, I am tracking the satellite's telemetry and have my helmet firmly secured. :bye:

I remember the "I survived Skylab" t-shirts though.

One of my co-workers thought he saw it fall tonight, but I just did a news search and can't find anything about it. He described seeing a fiery streak across the sky. I guess it was just a good sized meteor. Those things can be pretty cool when they're big enough to have flames shooting out of them. I'll have to remember to let him know what he really saw.

thinking back.. maybe thats why north korea was test firing missles. they knew this shit would happen.

It's different. They were testing a missile system that can shoot satellites out of orbit. That system can conceivably be used to shoot down any satellite.

I have full trust in those former carter administration officials that are going to shoot it down. And if they miss, may we all be horrible crushed from above somehow.
We're gonna shoot that shit to the sky. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23166344/)
U.S. officials said that the option preferred by the administration will be to fire a missile from a U.S. Navy cruiser, and shoot down the satellite before it enters Earth's atmosphere.
Officials said the Navy would likely shoot it down before then, using a special missile modified for the task. The Navy will fire two or three SM-3 missiles from a cruiser and destroyer off the Northwest coast of Hawaii.
You're welcome. ::smile:
Or we can fire a ASM-135 ASAT. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASM-135_ASAT)

I wonder if conspiracy nuts are going to find a correlation between the launch time and the lunar eclipse.
WASHINGTON - A missile launched from a Navy ship successfully struck a dying U.S. spy satellite passing 130 miles over the Pacific on Wednesday, a defense official said. Full details were not immediately available. It happened just after 10:30 p.m. EST.

I heard if you played Pink Floyd at the same time as the missile was launched, the album ends when the satellite was destroyed...
All that you touch
All that you see
All that you taste
All you feel.
All that you love
All that you hate
All you distrust
All you save.
All that you give
All that you deal
All that you buy,
beg, borrow or steal.
All you create
All you destroy
All that you do
All that you say.
All that you eat
And everyone you meet
All that you slight
And everyone you fight.
All that is now
All that is gone
All that's to come
and everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon.
