Larry King use to string together random thoughts in a USA Today bit....don't know if he does it anymore....but here I will be running a stream of consciousness monolog/dialog with anyone who cares to get involved.

....about The Spiderwick Chronicles.....

The great John Sayles helped on the script and it shows. The family has a nice bickering chemistry. Since I never felt all that emotionally connected to many of the fantasy films so far, this one takes a step in the right direction. Though far from perfect, it has a more magical feel than either Harry Potter, Narnia or the Lord of the Rings. Stay for the end credits for some terrific graphics.

As much as we thinks Stallone is silly trying to be an action hero at 61.....deep down we respond to Rambo. We want a strong, silent and capable soldier who will decimate our enemies. I probably like this Rambo more than some of the others because at this time and place he is wrecking vengeance on enemies who are not in the news. They are just bad guys that deserve to be punished in the worst way. Obviously all the movies that deal with the current war and terrorists have bombed because people are not able to face reality.

On a side note, I was a little shocked at the gore in this Rambo. I can't count very high but I couldn't count the amount of holes blown in people or body parts flying. I'm sure someone else on the internet has counted though.

The rating description line in the New York Times review of Rambo by A.O. Scott had a laugh-out-loud description of the gratuitous violence, but it's no longer available on their website.

It was downright poetic, so I am very disappointed that I couldn't share it with you.

(In general, I enjoy reviews written by A.O. Scott. I may not always agree with him, but I love his style.)
