I just got word a little while ago that an old buddy of mine died this morning. He had gone from a "partier" to a full-blown raging alcoholic in recent years and now he leaves behind a wife and four kids. He was in his early 40's and drank himself to death.

A few years ago I lost another long time friend who had a history of drug and alcohol problems. He committed suicide in a hotel room when his wife threw him out of the house because he refused to get treatment for his problems.

I'm not one to preach, but I think it's important to remind people from time to time that friends, relatives, and even yourselves can all make that dangerous turn from someone who likes to get fucked up into being a hollow shell of a human being who lives to get high.

I'm not really sure why I'm posting this, just wanted to get it off my chest.

Love you guys.

My words will do nothing to assuage whatever you're feeling about this, but I offer my measly "I'm sorry" anyway. I'm not gonna preach, get judgmental, none of that... not my place, don't know the case, don't know shit even if I smelt it. I've had the experiences with family members, the buddies addled on cocaine and whatever else they liked doing. I can feel the potentiality for addiction in my own blood, the complete 180 I turn when full of liquor. That don't compare to this guy's story. I just can't comprehend it, nor do I pretend to. I just know it's a goddamn shame. And that this shit can happen to anyone who lets himself get caught up in something.

And so I hope that at the very least people we love who are still with us today can try to remember their own limitations or whatever... and try to keep it within the limit. If it takes one of these stories to convince people to keep an eye on themselves, so be it. Put some use into this useless and unnecessary death. Some politician said ya can't take politics personally. Same with drinking...that's when it gets crazy.

We all love ya too Greg. My condolences to you and all else who knew him. Godspeed.

Sorry to hear that. It really sucks to watch someone waste themselves in that way.

In a twisted way it is motivation to control one's self.

Sorry to hear about your friend, buddy. I recently lost someone very close to me and I know how hopeless it feels. Don't feel weird about posting this, hopefully someone read it who needed to. At times like this sometimes you feel its about all you can do is try to help the next one.

Peace, Bro.

tough thing to swallow man....

i know, i had to go to a wake on friday for a kid that was 19. i've known this kid since he was 3.
when people your age or younger start dying, it kind of kicks your mind in the ass and makes you re-evaluate everything.

addiction is a bitch. just be thankful you are not addicted to drugs or the booze.
it wrecks lives, man.

you know where to find me ~

Greg, I am also sorry for the loss of your friend. I know it hit you really hard or you would not have broken your vow for lent to come here.
You were very right to say "I think it's important to remind people from time to time that friends, relatives, and even yourselves can all make that dangerous turn from someone who likes to get fucked up into being a hollow shell of a human being who lives to get high."

I know alot of people who should heed your warning.

I will pray for the family and for you, I am so sorry.

G, that's awful - I'm sorry about your friend.

You are so right about how easy it is. I've never gotten that bad, but years ago I had gone into such a depressed state that I started drinking way too heavily often enough that it was slowly putting me on a very bad path. Thankfully one of my friends talked some sense to me which helped a lot, now I try to stay conscious of it all the time because I never want to feel that way again.
