Im buying a new laptop and found 2 great deals. I cant decide which one to buy. I love gateway but the one with more is a compaq. Here are the specs and pricing.

They both have 2 gb ram and intel pentium dual core processor. The only real difference is the gateway is 15.4 screen and the compaq is 17 screen with a built in web cam and full size keyboard with #'s on the side. Gateway costs $549 and the compaq is $599.

So which one? I need to oreder in the next few minutes or i might miss out

me too. but i keep looking at the 17" screen, built in webcam and full desktop size built in keyboard. I miss having the #'s on the side. Its so much easier to type #'s then with a regular size laptop keyboard.

Its not so much that I think compaq's are shit. I had 2 compaq's in my lifetime and my cousin has one now. I think its more of what software normally comes with gateway. Compaq now has a lot of the shitty HP software now.

explain that for me? Why isnt it a good combo and what should I change that?

As for dell.

The deals on these 2 computers are insane. To build a dell with what these 2 have would cost a couple hundred $$$ more. Im not a big fan of Dell. I had a dell it worked great but there was always something that I didnt really like. I just can explain it

i thought about buying a dell with vista and just wiping it out and putting my copy of xp on it.
until i did some reading and found that tons of people were going through insane steps to wipe vista from their sata drives to put xp back on. evidently, its something about how they are made. maybe somebody else can explain it better.

Vista comes with SATA Hard Drive Support, XP doesn't. When you try to put in an XP install CD, it won't recognize the Hard Drive (because it's SATA). You can get around this with some work. Make sure XP drivers are available for all the hardware on your laptop before you do anything ... if there are no XP drivers for your video card this would be pointless. You will have to make (or get somehow) an XP installation CD with SATA drive support. If you do a search, there's a ton of explainations on easy ways to do this.

since - based on another thread - you replace your computers rather frequently, go with the Compaq.

The larger screen and keyboard are a nice addition, and you probably have tons of software from the other laptops you bought. Pull off the additional HP crap and you are set.

BTW - where is this deal, if you don't mind? You can even PM me if you don't want to say publicly, or just ignore me if you want to keep it secret. NHNF.

I went with the compaq. The 17" screen, webcam and full keyboard was just to good a deal to pass up. The compaq was at bestbuy.com and the gateway was at newegg. I gateway changed price today and is now $100 more. I heard if you call they will give you the former price if you bitch. The compaq was sold out, but I had it in my cart when through all the steps and got a confirmation # saying it will receive it 2/14-2/19. I hope I dont get an email saying sorry it was too late! That happen to me one once before on amazon.

my Compaq lasted all but a year

my Gateway last a good 3 , and never had problems

this is not fact, merely my opinion based on personal experience
