When I've been sick I've always 'called in' sick to work. I had never heard the 'call out' term until moving to NJ. I hear both now so...do you call in or call out?

I've never heard 'call out' sick. It's always been 'call in'.
You 'call in' to your work to notify them that you will not be there that day.
I 'call out' to my wife to let her know I'm working late so I can stay and munch on the secretary's box. Actually I don't, I just used that as an example.

I do not, when people call in they mess my day up, and I dont like returning the favor.
I really hate the fucktards who take "p-l" days just to use them, cause the fucked up unions make it ok to simply call in and say, "I am taking a p-l day" and the only requirement is unenforceable, you are suppose to be home during work hours.

'call out', as in calling to say you'll be out that day.

I call on. On the good people of my work to be able to progress through the day without me.
Unfortunately, due to rather serious medical stuff I've had to call out a lot lately. One of my managers was a real bitch to me. It's not my fault I have a lesion on my spinal cord that makes me hurt as if I'm being burned. But I understand that she has a business to run.

That's why I call both my manager AND an assistant manager; I've got their office numbers programmed into my cell phone.
Sometimes, I also call one of my teammates as a backup in case I get an out-of-office message on the manager/assistant manager's voicemail.
And, depending on the day, I'll say both "call out" and "call in" ...

If they ask what's wrong; you tell them you have anal glaucoma. When they ask what it is tell them you can't see your ass coming in to work today.

b/c you are calling in ( to the office and/or boss) to say you're not coming in
but you're calling out meaning you wont be showing up
ive always said called out though , it akes more sense to me

We've always used the term "Banged out sick".
You call in to call out.
This is the only proper answer.
Everything else is just the ramblings of mental cases.
Lock it up.

What's up with the term "standing on line" that I hear our good friends from the north use.
Down here we say "standing in line" like standing in a line of people. "Standing on line" makes me think of people actually standing on a line painted on the floor.
