....an envelope that contains a piece of paper on which is written whether my unborn child is a boy or a girl.

Do I open it?

Ooooh! This is just like Maury!

I'd probably want to be surprised at the moment of birth but to prepare better (clothes, name choices, etc.) I'd want to know right away.

I say open the envelope.

EDIT - and congratulations!

My wife went into preterm labor and was bed ridden for 10 weeks before our first child. During the course she had 11 ultrasounds to check the baby each time we had to tell them we did not want to know the sex of the baby. It was very difficult but the surprise at my sons birth was someting I enjoyed.
So I would say no

A piece of paper? Don't they just ask you if you want to know durning the ultrasound? Marc's right, you'll open it regardless of whether you should or not.

Congratulations, by the way.

My wife didn't want to know, but she knew I was undecided, so she asked the nurse to write it on a piece of paper and put it in an envelope, so I could open it if I wanted to know.

I'd probably want to be surprised at the moment of birth but to prepare better (clothes, name choices, etc.) I'd want to know right away.

My parents had options for either gender for all of us except Sheepy. (Mom was convinced she was carrying a girl and refused to consider any boys' names. That's when Dad went to church.)

As for clothes, well, there are plenty of adorable white/cream, yellow and green colored sleepers in gender-neutral designs (i.e. - no frilly collars, etc.) every season ... we just had friends who didn't want to know what gender their new arrival was until Baby had actually arrived (which he did, last week; we're still waiting on photos) so, when we gave them a "get ready for Baby" gift, I bought stuff in shades of green. When my cousin Sue was expecting her first, she was the same way (wanted a surprise) ... so I bought an adorable sleeper with little yellow duckies all over it.

When the baby finally arrives, especially if it's your first or a first grandchild on either side, your relatives will inundate you with so much gender-specific crap that you'll be thankful you've stocked up on colors other than pink or blue!

So, Diablo, did you peek?

I see. Well, if your wife really doesn't want to know, you should throw the envelope away. If you know, you'll slip up at some point and ruin the surprise for her.

And IMSlacker is right - if your wife is ADAMANT about not knowing, don't read it. You will invariably slip at some point and give the sex of the baby away. Even if you don't mean to, the odds are you will end up making some innocent comment that blows the gig.

I heard this a couple times in this thread, and I assure you, no one will find out. I am scary good at this type of thing. It really comes down to if the surprise at the end outweighs the excitement of knowing what's coming.

Furie and I both wanted to know with our 1st. Even through I knew in my heart that I was having boy. And I was so upset when with our 2nd (i'm 6 months now) that the ultra sound didn't show what we were having. I was so upset that the dr had to schedule another sono for the next month. We finally found out that we are having girl.0

congrats.

If you don't want to know, why don't you open it, scan it, and post it without reading it. Then everyone can give you hints as to the gender and race, make it a fun little game.

Don't do it. They wanted to be surprised. My sister had her son last April. Her and her husband didn't want to know. My mom became suddenly ill. My sister wanted to tell her what the sex was. The day she found out the sex, my mom passed away. Lil' Christopher is the best thing that happened to our family.

I can't believe you've got the discipline to keep that envelope sealed. I think the suspense would get to me and I'd have to rip it open.

Good for you for holding out though. I think there's something really cool and special about being surprised.

And congratulations to you and the Mrs. on becoming proud parents again. All the best brother.

Actually, having the relatives know would just make it more likely that someone will slip and blab to Diablo's wife. Can't guarantee they're all as "scary good at this type of thing" as he is.

I say keep the envelope in a safe place, out of sight, until you decide if you want to peek. Whether you do or not is entirely up to you.

Well, I opened the envelope today.

After welcoming to the world Caleb Avery Sammich, 7 pounds, 6 ounces of pure bad-ass.

Hit the deck at 1:30 this morning, baby and mother are doing splendidly, thank you for asking!

I am dizzy with euphoria and lack of sleep, but I just wanted to thank all of you for your kind words after my departure. I loved them so much, I have hired various voice personalities to record live reads of the posts, so I can play them to myself at night.

Think Gvac is sexy now? Listen to his posts read by Sleeves.
