View Full Version : Wednesday = Total Lunar Eclipse

FYI fellow space travelers,
This wednesday if weather cooperates the entire USA can see a total lunar eclipse, the last for a few years.
Link to Eclipse Info HERE (http://www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/highlights/15357796.html)
I took these photos of the last eclipse:
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m110/MizzleT/Eclipse_28Aug07_MikeBlack2.jpg
They show the moon being covered by the Earth's shadow. This will start about 8:45pm Eastern time, and the moon will be in total eclipse by 10:00.
So, Wednesday if it's clear, the sky has a performance for us, nothing needed but naked eyes.

I prefer the Mayan/Incan approach of gathering up all the usual suspects and beheading them by the dozens to please the Gods and make the Sun [or Moon, in this case] come back.

Sure, you laugh now, but it worked every time.

Nice that Diego de Landa burned all those books Mayan books too. Great move.

Bumpy Bumperton says hello and the eclipse is tonight.
For east coast:
8:45pm ish = the Langoliers begin eating the moon; at this time you may hear the song 'Also Spake Tharathustra' and have the need to look up at the sky and maybe a monolith will appear in your den as you sleep.
10pm-10:50pm = the Moon is utterly gone; utter chaos rules. The End of Days. Gods must be appeased, the Universe is in disorder, we need the Fifth Element or evil will conquer.
10:50pm = If we appease the Gods with enough beheadings and ritual sacrifices, they may begin to bring the moon back. Or not. Not sure how many ritual sacrifices God wants these days to bring back the Moon.
after 11pm you can see the moon come back slowly. I hope.
Off to find a goat and a virgin. Maybe a virgin goat. How can you tell?

I've got a great view from my skylight. I'm just sitting on the couch, drinking some wine, watching Mythbusters and looking at the eclipse. Does it get any better than this? I think not.

Beautiful stuff. Had you not pointed it out, we would have missed it.
What causes it all to hang together though with such wobbly precision? Why doesn't the moon just fly away? It has plenty of reasons to and not to...It's not like it's held there on some superstructure. We're just floating...
=
Same as like what causes two bodies to come together (say, a man and woman) and make a being? What causes that being to exist for 80 or 90 years and then expire? What energy causes the things that create a human or a flower or whatever to exist and its atoms to hang together for a time and then decide to dissipate one day?

The eclipse was cool. The sky was strangely clear tonight.
Here at the NJ shore at 7pm it was cloud city, after a dusting of snow. Then boom, it cleared on cue. Lucky.
And astronomical events are acquired tastes. For some this is bone-crushing boring, and I can see that.
Things have been pretty boring in the sky in our lifetimes. We havent had a real major event, a meteor shower so intense thousands are seen an hour, or a Tunguska/Meteor Crater sized hit by a comet or asteroid, the real cool events like total solar eclipses are way too rare unless youre willing to travel, and even thats exciting for what? A few minutes? We need a comet so close and huge it spans the sky for months. Nights bright enough to read by for weeks. Auroras so intense the people near the equator can see. Its happened, just not recently.

Had a very clear view of it all night, even in Manhattan.
I love lunar eclipses... reminds me of The Red Sox final game of 2004.
That was pretty cool to watch.

I thought we were going to miss it here in the Philly area since we had snow late in the afternoon and early evening. However, it cleared up in time and we had a beautiful view of the eclipse!
I took my 3 year old out to look at the eclipse; it was really special.
Thanks for the pics Mike the Teacher! I couldn't find my camera, so it's great to have some photographic documentaion.

What a great display. After a cloudy start is was crystal clear to see the red moon once it total eclipsed.
What I really liked was the three stars to the northwest of the moon that revealed itself behind the moonlight. They were in triangle formation. I have to look up which stars they were... but just a great event altogether.

You're right.
During the eclipse, the Moon will be in Leo. Saturn and bright star Regulus are only 3 degrees east and west, respectively, of the Moon.

Nice!!! Yes, the bright 'star' to the left of the moon was Saturn, and above it, one of the bright stars of Leo. I got Saturn and Moon in one shot:

I made the mistake of looking directly at the eclipse. It didn't blind me but it did open a portal.
