Well, I'll beat Matty out and say the obvious with Battlestar Galactica.
I think those two Addams Family films are pretty good.
A couple of the Star Trek films were an obvious improvement on that crappy old TV series.
Can't really think of anything else.

Battlestar Galactica is better than the original.
The remakes of The Wizard of Oz, 10 Commandments and The Maltese Falcon were better than the originals.

Batman Begins. Although nothing beats the original Catwomen or Batgirl from the t.v show.

I wouldn't classify that as a remake.
It wasn't a remake of the Batman movie from the '60's or from 1990.
EDIT: The question was about "versions" rather than "remakes" so I guess Batman Begins could suffice.

I would argue that the new Doctor Who series is better than the old one. Although the stories are very close in quality, the new ones are a little more "adult" IMO.
And there is no question that the production values and special effects are better in the new Doctor Who series.

But lleeder didn't specify that it had to be a remake - we were just assuming that was the case. He asked about new versions being better than the original.
I think Batman Begins would be considered a new version. The new Batman is the same concept/story essentials of the 1980's Batman (origin and "unveiling" in Gotham), but it takes a different spin.

See above.
I wouldn't call the 1980's Batman the original though. The original Batman movie was in the '60's and the original Batman was in a different format. And yes, the same could be said about the Ben Hur, The Maltese Falcon and the Wizard of Oz.
All of these really weren't remaking the previous movies, as much as doing a different adaptation of the original work which was in a literary format.

They also had older Batman films and serials back in the day, too.

not that i saw the original, and it isn't a universal opinion, but more people seem to be leaning towards the american version.

People who have seen both? Just quickly scanning online, that doesn't seem to be the case.
I enjoy The Departed, but is really is just like an over-pulped Cliff's Notes version of the first two Infernal Affairs films.

The Honeymooners.
A couple of the Star Trek films were an obvious improvement on that crappy old TV series.
However, the best of those was a sequel to an episode from the original TV series.

Good Point
Good Point
Ghost and the Darkness..Far Superior than origional which had another title... probably due to the increased production Budget..
Doctor Who and Gallactica get my votes for TV
Flash Gordon I am not a fan of...unless it is a remake of Sliders... and then it pales and in comparison.
Birdcage was far funnier than La Cage Aux Folles, in my opinion.

Really? Huh, I liked the origional better...
Can't wait for remake of Dambusters...I loved the origional in History Class in college
I could see someone arguing they liked The Magnificent Seven more than Seven Samurai. I would not be that person.

Nor would I. Seven Samurai is a movie classic. Magnificent Seven is a fun western re-make with some really horrendous casting.

I would say Magnificent Seven is a classic western. People who don't like foreign-language films or black and white films might prefer the cowboy version.
Others might argue that The Three Amigos! is an updated version of Seven Samurai. Out of those three I'd still go with the original.

Yes but that is mostly due to improvements in technology, so the cartoons are better. The stories also changed to follow more updates comic storylines.
I think they question is more of the story/acting and not just the animation.
Cape Fear with Deniro either surpassed Mitchum or came damn near close I agree whole-heartedly!
Well I wonder if Knight Rider will be better then the original (it couldn't be any worse)
But movie wise??? That's tough.
I heard Rob Zombies "Halloween" was kick ass compared to the original.
Mojo was right on about the Addams family movies, but it is tough to compare a modern movie with a show that was done in the 60's (right...or was it the 50's?). Which is why Star Trek was easier to deal with on the big screen.

If you're saying that TV series was better than the movie, you're goin to a special Hell shared by those freaks that think Scorsese's Cape Fear is better.

The James Jones novel 'The Thin Red Line' was made into a movie twice.
The genius Terrence Malick's 1998 version is far superior to the 1964 version.

King Kong '05 had the technology and grand scale going for it. Yet it was crap. I guess it was overkill on the CGI and bad casting. I watched it a second time. Still crap.

Cameron's Titanic was an improvement over A Night To Remember, but man did he steal, and I think theres was a previous 'Titanic' ?
Gojira 1954 still is the best of the guy in a suit stomping tokyo; but the real japanese version without raymond burr spliced in after.
I havent seen the remakes of Wonka and Manchurian Candidate because why fuck with perfection?

Yes. It was a German film, I think.
The new Manchurian Candidate is actually very good, but no where near as great as the original.

Eh. Personal taste, I guess. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie, but I was somewhat disappointed having seen the TV series first. I thought it'd be funnier.

The original "spiderman" movie has white ropes as webs. The newer cartoons are better too.
