i can't really think of another technical 2008 release -- but, as far as fairly recent releases, the new thurston moore (http://www.amazon.com/Trees-Outside-Academy-Thurston-Moore/dp/B000UZ4FMY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1203700719&sr=1-1), les savy fav (http://www.amazon.com/Lets-Stay-Friends-Savy-Fav/dp/B000UVLSVE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1203700756&sr=1-1) and radiohead (http://www.amazon.com/Rainbows-Radiohead/dp/B000YXMMAE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1203700802&sr=1-1) are great

i actually think this is Jack's worst album to date. I dig about 5 songs on there and thats it. It's like when Dylan went electric, it just didnt click with a lot of people at first. I'm hoping eventually i fall in love with this album, but for now im indifferent about it.

It's so premature to talk best albums of 2008 at this point in the year. You could have purchased an album that blew you away, but perhaps down the line in fall 2008 an album will come out that will surpass that easy.

I have several albums I'm looking forward too. The Slakcers-Self Medicated, Thrice-The Alchemy Index III/IV, the new Alkaline Trio record. 2008 could be a very good year for music for me.

All the members of the band have said it's their best work. They are reaching above and beyond things they've done before.

But it was one of the better albums of 2005. Paul has a great voice, which never would be known if Damien didnt leave the band.

I haven't heard the new Jason Mraz album yet, but I'll wage good money that it isn't the "best" album of 2008. Just a guess from a hetero male.

I don't know if it's the best, but I've enjoyed it tremendously.

Now I know I'm new at this message board thing, and I also am going to see Jason Mraz in October...but being an avid Jason Mraz fan is quite gay sir. I don't care what type of beer you drink. P.S. - I'm the exception.

i gotta agree with you, liking Mraz is prob. a little gay. Is it as gay as fruit in your beer? I submit not, but gay nonetheless.

and i wasn't saying its one of the best albums of 2008, i just said it was bad ass. and it is.

I haven't bought any NEW albums (including downloads) this year. I'll probably get the new AC/DC album even though I hate the idea of buying anything from Wal-Mart.

Rolling Stone 4 out 5 stars

"At 25, I turned out the light/'Cause I couldn't handle the glare in my tired eyes." Those lines in "Goin' Home" bluntly refer to Brian Wilson's famous mental shutdown in 1967, during the sessions for the aborted Beach Boys album Smile. But that bridge is sung by a pitch-perfect choir in a radiant, white-funk song that, like the rest of this record, evokes the healing feeling of the Beach Boys' great Smile-recovery LPs, 1967's Wild Honey and 1968's Friends. A series of compact tunes and spoken reveries written by Wilson with Scott Bennett and original Smile lyricist Van Dyke Parks, That Lucky Old Sun is blatantly nostalgic in its pre-acid California dreaming (the title cover was a 1949 hit for Frankie Laine) and echoes of Wilson's early less-troubled bloom: the surf-side doo-wop of "Good Kind of Love," the deep saxes and vibraphone in "Forever She'll Be My Surfer Girl." His voice is drowsy and uneven in the narratives, but he sings with a reborn will, even when the truth hurts. "I wasted a lot of years," Wilson admits in "Oxygen to the Brain" but insists, as the circus horns come in, "I'm filling up my lungs again and breathing life." That Lucky Old Sun lacks the magnificent shock of SMiLE, Wilson's 2004 completion of that '67 album. But it has a natural, hopeful flow that leaves you warm all over. So far, WOW! Best voice in music today maybe. I've listened to "Sex on Fire" about 50 times over the weekend. Hope it holds up.

Have the new TV on the Radio too. Gave it a quick listen but will hold off til i can get into it to review it.

Thrice - The Alchemy Index: Vols. I-IV

http://991.com/newGallery/Thrice-The-Alchemy-Index-432177.jpg

Another EXCELLENT set of albums from Thrice. This album is an experiment in different music styles. Some songs are straight-up rock, others are purely instrumental, mixes of digital, and some are complete brass/acoustic. You can tell the difference in sound by the name of the Volume (Fire, Water, Earth, Air). This set starts out flat out in your face and kick ass, and flows into total chill.

Main reason I enjoy Thrice is because the music is heavily influences by religion and mythology. There is a lot of references to lines from the Bible, the Torah, and others sources. A few of the songs are directly about religion (The Messenger being about the frightened thoughts the Apostles had when embarking on the spreading the good word), to persepective views on mythology (Daedalus is the story of his son Icarus' flight and fall to death).

A+ Just good listening.

Fleet Foxes Self Titled
My Morning Jacket Evil Urges
Deerhunter Microcastle

all good to great albums. good music year so far...

I would put Fleet Foxes at the top of the list. Even if it isn't your favorite type of music, it sounds like an album rather than a collection of songs.

Not sure what they were trying to do with the second half, but the first half could be the best stuff they've ever recorded.

I mostly agree. The first half are some great songs, show some real development. However, I think they are losing a little of what drew most people to them in the first place. I wish the second half had been a little more stripped-down, southern like Youth and Young Manhood.
