Can anyone tell me the names of the songs Daniel played on the show? I was working and kept coming in and out of the car so I missed all the crucial stuff.
Thanks

just out of curiousity, who is this guy? ive never heard of him, is he somebody thats like super famous and i missed the boat on him? Listening to his music i almost threw up about 40 times. it was so awful and i couldnt understand for the life of me why Ron was praising him so much. it was literally simple beats on a piano followed by a story in verse that didn't make sense. Plus he was never in key and his little speech impediment made him sound silly. is this guy famous for his music, and if so, why?

He is cult famous because of his life story. Quite an interesting guy.

now that ive learned he's autistic, the praise makes much more sense. he's very high functioning and what he's been able to do is quite impressive. good for him!

Agreed.....a Ron&Fez hall-of-fame instant classic.
...quite possibly the R&F segment that has the greatest chance of being listened to 100years from now?
(yeah, yeah, i know; "i wish i was in the future so i wasn't alive to hear that...." etc)

Daniel is on the short list of famous musical Texas weirdos, including Roky Erikson and the Legendary Stardust Cowboy...he's very sad and interesting. I know, I know, he's no Justin Timberlake.
Trivia fact: a drawing of his, a space-vixen with a badge reading no. 13, inspired the Pixies song, Number 13 Baby.

Yup, it was in a car outside of a Sheetz gas station/convenience store in Westminster, MD. He said he saw the devil enter my soul thru my eyes & had to choke him out B4 Satan took possession of me permanently. Unfortunately, he had a predilection for choking & biting people bcuz of his BPD & accompanying religious delusions. Later that same day, he recorded the version of "Don't Play cards With Satan" that appears in The Devil & Daniel Johnston."

I didn't know about the Pixies connection; very cool.
RE: Sad+interesting Texan weirdos; high praise imo -i will be checking out Rory Erikson.
Also, another reason i liked the R+F interview; i never specifically understood why Cobain was a fan (beyond fringe weirdoism)--but with the kiddie keyboards and lousy vocal aesthetics, it highlighted the absolutely airtight song strucure/melody.
PS- Based on suddenly hearing the segment, i can't remember, but if it was Dave who came up with the insight of having those keyboards available; kudos!

I thank Ron and Fez for introducing me to such hauntingly beautiful music. I can't wait to see the documentary. To think that I worry about anything in the artistic process, when someone with out all our natural gifts, can make such moving music makes me ashamed. I love this guy's work and I find myself wanting to be better because I know about him. Thank you guys! Great show.

Daniel Johnston on The Henry Rollins Show:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3615X2qOA-0&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3615X2qOA-0&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
I was introduced to Daniel Johnston's music by some cover he did of a School House Rocks! song. The thing about him is that his music is for the sort of people who can appreciate real, heartfelt music and don't necessarily need skilled musicianship to enjoy a song. Plus, his lyrics are top notch and if you get the backstory they can be haunting and/or exhilarating.

P.S. Bowie recorded The Ledge's "I took a trip on a Gemini Spaceship" on his HEATHEN record as a kind of payback, since there was never any kind of any kind of financial exchange about for his use of the Stardust name.
P.P.S. I'm glad Bobo's back. I was feeling so lonely and nerdy!

Any "normal" person wouldn't be able to pull of what he can...thats the whole point. Due to his autistic and bi-polar disorders there is an unlikely beauty to his lyrics. If your average douchie emo band came out with the same songs we'd all trash at him, but when Daniel sings them they come across with a child-like honesty that I just don't hear very often. Who really knows...its all a matter of taste anyway.
I can't wait till Unhallowed comes out with a cover of some of his music.

It's all about commitment, the definition of an outsider artist is someone who is compulsively creative under any circumstances, nothing gets in his way, not technique, not response, not payment or any other form of compensation. There is no hindrance to his creativity either, some person's laughter is no more damning than the wind whistling thru the trees, it's just another sound. Outsider artists are purely creative people, simply & totally dedicated to the act of being creative. The average person has no frame of reference for these artists becuz they have accepted the mainstream pop culture as their world & only want to be passively entertained, not enlightened or expanded, that's too much work. It's like having a world view that's the equivalent of walking into a Baskin Robbins ice cream parlor & always ordering vanilla bcuz the other 30 flavors are "different," or too weird...
There's nothing intrinsically WRONG w/ pop culture, but there's a whole lot more to this world if ya bother to take a look (& a listen) & can learn to be openminded!!!

I wasn't intending to single you out, but yer comment about being laffed at seemed to me to be a fearful reaction & I actually felt bad that you felt that way. When I say "you" in my response, it was in general to all the "he sux" reactions, not you specifically. I guess I should have phrased that differently. It's more like the cultureless/thoughtless void that this country has disintegrated into... now's here's yer opportunity OVERREACT to that too!!! HA HA HA!!!

I'm always perplexed by the impulse to jump into a thread where people are discussing something to let us know that they don't like it. Everyone wants to be heard. If we're enjoying something, why do we care what they think? Life is short, take enjoyment where you can find it. Like what you like. It's like people who register onto Ronfez.net to let us know that they don't like Ron and Fez.
This is the disease of the internet.

First, I would like to say that FebruaryJeff is a douche. There will be no line, asshole.
Second, I saw Daniel Johnston last night and it was a really great experience.
I had several thoughts and musings on the man, the show, the universe but I hashed them all out as I wandered the streets of Nashville so I won't bother to lay them out here.
I still haven't slept.
