Are you ready to try and force your opinion on music down other peoples throats? Are you ready to try and convince the world that your music collection is better than everyone elses even though you own Ugly Kid Joe, 7 Mary 3, way too much Aerosmith & and random tracks by Jewel and Alanis Morissette? Well this is the place to do it.

Nah, I know how much i hate being force fed music, or even forced to listen to music i do not enjoy. Based on that I could not just forced my musical tastes on people just for the hell of it. . .

now if i was getting paid to do that, hmm. . .

I'll start this off with something we discussed on the show a few weeks back. It's my top 12 albums of the last 12 years. (no particular order)

More perfect... (in whom the meters owe it all to) Allen Toussaint - Life, Love And Faith (1972)

Let's just all agree that the Meters kick ass.

Any of you Meters fans listen to Cymande at all? Kinda similar, but with a bit more of a Carribbean feel:

I dig it, Pin and YES, the Meters are just amazing. Even George Porter Jr. is great. His new band is in the same spirit and grooves as well.
Naturally, a lot of bands took from the Meters over the years and one up-an-comer band from England I've been enjoying the last couple of years is THE NEW MASTERSOUNDS.

Nice! I was wondering what the hell happened to him...

That's why I love backpacker hip-hop so much...still so much skill with the samples. Growing up with hip-hop really expanded my musical horizons because I would pour over the liner notes of tracks I loved and wanna find out where the samples came from.

Yeah if you take the time to read the liners you can find some real hidden treasures, and sometimes it's a six degrees of kevin bacon typa deal. One time it led to a great movie, I was dyin to know where Madlib got the samples for Quasimoto - Come on Feet

and it let me to one of my favorite movies:

The Fantastic Planet AKA Plančte sauvage, La (1973) (A french mindfuck animated movie from the 70's) humans as pets to aliens

I just noticed google video actually has the whole movie (70 minutes) I recommend being fucked up before watching.

EDIT : I just realized some fuck remixed the music in the movie with some techno bullshit. Shame. Look for it elsewhere it's on torrent sites.

My Top 12 Albums 1995-2007:

1995: The Rentals - Return of The Rentals
1996: Weezer - Pinkerton
1997: Ben Folds Five - Whatever And Ever Amen
1998: (VERY thin year) Catatonia - International Velvet
1999: The Rentals - Seven More Minutes
2000: At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command
2001: Beulah - The Coast is Never Clear
2002: Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
2003: Ted Leo - Hearts of Oak
2004: Wilco - A Ghost is Born
2005: The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
2006: Malajube - Trompe-L'oeil
2007: Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?

Finding late 90's albums (not singles) that I still bother with was tough.. Rivers Cuomo & Matt Sharp are responsible for most of what I can still tolerate from the time.

Band with only 1 Good Album:
Danzig - How The Gods Kill, is for some reason very strong the whole way through. The rest of the catalog (Including "mother") is kind of a waste of time.
Although I almost agree with the sahara hotnights album mentioned on the show.. 'jennie bomb' is kind of solid, though

Best Last Album:
At the Drive in - Relationship of command - After 3 emo albums, they decided to 'borrow' singing delivery from Zach DeLaRocha, before disbanding, and moving move on to go batshit insane, and 'borrow' delivery from Robert Plant.

And, because my list is making me look a little too "PitchforkMedia-y", I must insist, all-time:
Favorite Song: Bowie - Life on Mars
Album: Blonde on Blonde

how about your favorite one-man-bands? The three that made me think of this are Atom and His Package, Buckethead & onelinedrawing. To qualify they can work with guest musicians now and then but the majority of their songs must be self played/programmed. also, a guy and his acoustic guitar does not constitute a one man band.

I think Andrew Bird is a true one-man-band, especialy live.

He is usualy onstage alone, and uses a foot-pedal device to record live loops of his violin, guitar, xylophone, and whistling. Often looks like a maniac while doing it, but it's amazing to watch.

So I see there have been no bites on "Top albums of the 2000's".. hopefuly it's because others are considering it seriously, and taking their time.

But in the same discussion, CT mentioned some kind of mathematically set up playlists. And while for good reason he didn't elaborate on it on the show.. I'd be interested to hear what other people do. I always feel like my music is all over the place, so when I put on shuffle, I just spend most of the time skipping.

I tried using the star ratings in itunes, but I had a hard time keeping up on it, and I'm not going to sit there and rate EVERYTHING from 1 to 5.

Since the topic of an over-the top organized itunes library has been brought up a few times on the air, just wondering what others do.. or am I the only bore who is interested in this?

I would have to look up the name of the program, but I found one that would automatically rate my iTunes library based on play counts and skip counts and some other shit I didn't really care about, all in all I wouldn't recommend it because I ended up going through and changing it manually anyhow.

Currently I usually listen on song shuffle, or My top rated playlist. If something really good comes up I will rate it, but usually I forget,

Also I need to say EFF YOU to Jivin for mentioning the need to have an album cover for every song on my iPod, I never cared about it before, but now I am obsessed with it.

Only about 6000 more songs to go, finding album covers sucks, and iTunes is useless most of the time with the automatic feature.

I think I may have looked at this thread once. and did again, and was reminded of something sad.

Although all illegal, I had 4000 songs. All sorted in folders, alphabetically, and edited to be punctually correct on my ipod. But one day I decided to save stuff to my ipod and use it as a hard drive. so I erased my songs from it and left years and years of song collecting and editing on my computer...

Then I install XP service pack 3...

Fuck you microsoft. So now I have no songs and can't be bothered to start over again. Thank god for Satellite radio.

Coheed & Cambria - the second stage turbine blade (2002)
Coheed & Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth:3 (2003)
Modest Mouse - Good news for people who like bad news (2004)

So Rick, and Shaan, since you are both FIF fans, I was wondering if you are following Brave Saint Saturn at all. Their last album is due to come out on the 15 of this month.

Definitely not the same type of band, a lot darker, but I must admit I do enjoy them as well.

I agree with everything that has been said about BS2 so far, they will never be FIF, although I don't believe that was ever their intent. Different, and decent, but will never hold a candle to FIF.

You know a band is good when you can't decide which song is your favorite. My opinion changes from one day to the next whether it is Marty, or Superpowers, or Dandelions, or something obscure I don't hear that much like Kingdom of the Dinosaurs.

dandelions has consistently been my number one, but these are not my pants and phantom mullet really make me laugh so hard its tough to not love them. one girl army is another contender with dandelions.
but when the last album came out, the version of every new day really almost put me to tears it was so moving. i missed going to the fishkill, NY show on their last tour, my friends went without me ;(

You just didn't know it was me singing because I have a similar talent to Anthony Cumia doing voices. If you have ever heard the Opie and Anthony show XM :king:202 then you've probably heard me singing for 4 min :thumbup:song as the intro called "Ecstasy:clap: of Gold".I do all the voices including the lead female :bye:falsetto. That was recorded 1987.Metallica used it as an opener for live shows 20 years. No shit! http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a65/j3lehane/P32Sandmarie2Fossil.jpg Original recorded 1966-67 Ennio Morricone.

Its kind of odd that I brought this up, then the next day iTunes 8 came out. The "Genius" option seems pretty good for making a playlist based off a favorite song.. Its basicaly pandora but out of your own music.

Also, if you're on mac, look up MPFreaker.. it takes your library, and does a pretty solid job of filling in Album art, genres, track numbers, etc..

Cool, I will try out MPFreaker, I'm not sure what to think of iTunes 8 yet. Initially I just switched everything back so it looked like 7, but I have just set it back to normal to give it a fair try. I'm just hoping all my scripts will still work in eight.
