This weekend was like a kidnapping marathon for me. I watched the movies Ransom, Firewall and Hostage. All three of these films show how stupid and nonsensical a kidnapping movie can be. I know Gone Baby Gone deals with kidnapping and maybe it makes more sense but this never seems to work out. The criminals always have the angles covered until the end where everything goes crazy. The seemingly normal person summons up super strength and agility and manages to kill all the kidnappers and save all his family members. The money is returned safely and noone innocent is harmed. I still get roped in everytime. :wallbash:

based on real life

I am not sure if this qualifies

There is no kidnapping. The nihilists faked out when Bunn went off on one of her benders.

One problem with kidnappings in movies is that you almost always see the kidnapping done for ransom. What percentage of kidnappings in the U.S. are for ransom? Sure if you're in Russia or a third world country, it may happen a lot, but I bet a large percentage of kidnappings aren't done for ransom, but rather for other purposes.

Doesn't one of the kidnappers actually kill all the other kidnappers in Ransom?

He kills 3 of the other kidnappers. Donnie Wahlberg, the 4th kidnapper, was killed earlier in the movie by the cops.

The only thing bad I can say about it is that it is in production to be remade:furious:

Agreed. The first time I saw Reservoir Dogs, I knew that Tarantino was inspired by this flick.

You and me, Dr. Joe. We track down the people responsible and make 'em pay, dental-style. I'll knock their teeth out, you fix 'em back up, and then I'll knock 'em out again.

"Man on Fire" could be one of the most underrated movies I can remember recently. It was outstanding IMO. However, I have 2 additional thoughts that sprang from watching it:

It made me AMAZINGLY paranoid when my fiancé and daughter went with her family to Mexico City. I was tremendously afraid that my daughter was going to be kidnapped, and it was all due to watching "Man of Fire."

It was the movie that "The Punisher" should have been. It had all the same elements to the story and Denzel was ruthlessly efficient in his righteous revenge. It was amazing.

MOF is a very cool little thriller, but every time I watch it I wish a better director had handled it besides Tony "I shoot and edit my films like if Oliver Stone at his druggiest and David Fincher in his MTV days and Terry Gilliam had a horrible mutant baby" Scott. Scott used to just be a glossier version of his overrated older brother, but now he shoots his films as if he saw 18 different ways to "intensely" shoot and edit a scene and decided to cram them all together at the same goddamn time for the entire film. MOF is bad enough with it, but Domino is one of the most unwachable films I've ever seen (for a number of reasons, but especially due to the crack-addled, ADD editing and shooting).

Alpha Dog was good

Truth and Consequences New Mexico was another good one that has a kidnapping in it

Fargo and the Vanishing are two other good ones

All the time. One rarely picks apart things they enjoy. Why can't I criticize MOF just because other people like it?

Winner

And Ransom certainly wasn't a four star movie, but it was still a decent flick.
