View Full Version : The Grateful Dead
I've always been a big fan of Achewood, but not until now has someone been able to describe my absolute loathing for the Grateful Dead. Nah
Look, I can appreciate the fact that they were an experimental band that went off the beaten path. I like people individualists and creativity. The music just doesn't suit me. I'm sure the majority of you would hate my music as well. The main thrust of the thread was about the comic strip and how it reflected my own personal opinion of The Grateful Dead's music.

There is just no room to argue against the power of the Dead in the 70s thru the mid 1980s. They were a fucking incredible live band.

I went through a Dead hating time - but I was mostly confused about their purpose... and I didn't smoke pot at the time, which is pretty important here. Also - it seemed like a bandwagon thing to latch onto so that you had an identitiy and could play hackey sack and not take a shower.
Later - I found pot. Then I found that the Dead considered themselves "off center" at their own shows. They'd play front and center on a stage but were really part of the experience that became such a frenzy.
I'm an American Beauty fan I admit but I can appreciate them and I'll never forget seeing them Giants Stadium '95. I was glad for that experience b/c then ol 9 fingers died. I guess God needed another rythym guitarist.

Since the merged channels has given us the Grateful Dead Channel it is on the other 21 hours I'm not listening to Ron and Fez. A few thoughts. It is a great station. It is particularly good for traveling distances as I did yesterday. They program it well spanning the 35 years and all the solo stuff. Love hearing legion of mary a Jerry side project. Full concert every day. Today in GD history. Couple of musical things. Nothing pisses me off more than Bob Weir playing Jerry Garcia songs. GD versions of Bob Dylan songs are almost always great and help to show what a genius Dylan is. Pigpen was fucking amazing
Nothing left to do but smile smile smile.

I am not a big fan of Phil and Friends.
I've seen them a couple times and they weren't bad
but every tune I've heard from them on the great channel 57
seems to be lacking something.
Ratdog is much better, not that it's a competition.

There is lots of godawful Dead music out there. Few would deny that. However, back in their prime, they were a very good live band. Listen to Europe '72 or any recording from around that time.

Just started listening again after almost five years of abstaining from the Dead. For some reason I had to hear Wharf Rat which led me to Loser & on and on... Gotta say, great fucking band, but I totally know how it sounds to people who don't dig it. The thing is that if you look at all their styles, the sheer number of songs, & the 30+ years performing-I guarantee that there are appreciable nuggets for everyone. Def not for everyone but if you deny the strength of their songwriting teams or overall musicianship, you aren't informed enough to comment. Yes there is a LOT of noodling and needlessness, but they could freaking cook when they were on the mark.

it takes a while to get used to the dead. and another big thing is you have to have a good ear to appreciate the dead. Its not pop and the melodies dont hit you upside the head. You have to listen for it. Unless you have a good ear or are willing to listen, a lot of it will just sail right over your head.

Playing things like Crazy Fingers that don't get on much, some terrapin stuff, a great Franklin's/Help/Slipknot and now a "Why don't we do it in the road?" cover.
Also, heard a live Dead version of Rubin and Cherise last night during the daily concert.
Apparently they only played it four times. Sounded great, I'm surprised it didn't make it into the rotation.

It was excellent. And Im pretty positive it was Grateful Dead and not Garcia/Saunders because Phil and Donna were both singing.

Today marks the 14th anniversary of The Grateful Dead's last show. 4 weeks later Jerry Garcia died in his sleep at Serenity Knolls rehab center. They say he had a smile on his face when he died.

Last Song Jerry ever sang. In the first verse he changes the lyrics from Black Muddy River to Last Muddy River.
Miss you Jerry

Doctor, Doctor, Mr. MD, I got to tell you...
I saw the penultimate show at RFK. Last song I heard Jerry sing was "Brokedown Palace" with completely appropriate lyrics
Miss him too

I have a framed print from that show that shows various and sundry heads spinning in the dust. Its a black and white, great picture. The focus is the crowd, you can barely see the boys in the distance through the dustcloud.
70-74 peak years
