What the hell is Grace Potter and the Nocturnals doing so far down on that list? They should come right before Jack Johnson.
I highly recommend everyone to check them out.

I spent my last two days here adn it was a fucking blast. Caught Radiohead both nights, first night I was 4 people from the front barricade. As incredible as their shows were, the motherfucking Roots had my favorite performance last night. So much energy and so much fun. Nothing else came close to that IMO. Here are some pics.
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/7379/apw1js8.jpg
Nice view of downtown walking into Liberty State Park.
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/6023/apw2zg2.jpg
The Blue Comet stage on Friday at 1:00 pm. The New Pornographers had just finished their sound check. No one was playing at this stage at all for another hour and a half. All these people here were going to wait seven and a half hours for Radiohead. I decided I'd have to join them to get a nice spot.
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/1513/apw3pc0.jpg
What everyone was waiting for.
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/6772/apw4hd7.jpg
The Go! Team. They were a hell of a lot of fun.
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/8646/apw5na9.jpg
Michael Franti and Spearhead. He had some great crowd interaction. Never had heard of him before but they were very good. good rock with some funk and African elements. After his set he came along the barricade and i got to shake his hand.
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/5161/apw6zj7.jpg
The New Pornographers. They were also a hell of a lot of fun, my favorite set behind The Roots and Radiohead. They finished with an awesome cover of Don't Let Me Down.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/3866/apw7ju4.jpg
The crowd behind me just before Underworld played. They were also hear for Radiohead and not Underworld basid on the tepid response they got.
http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/2534/apw8ef3.jpg
Underworld. At one point the lead singer had a handheld camera and was filiming himself singing while whipping the camera around. After effects were also added to make for a very trippy experience on the screen. The only fun part of that set.
http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/8003/apw9uu5.jpg
The best pic I have of Radiohead since my camera sucks ass at night. By this point I was really squeezed in up front so it was near impossible to get a steady shot.
http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/6788/apw10bi1.jpg
The Roots. No one, not on stage or in the crowd, looked and acted like they enjoyed being there more than them. They did a 20 minute version of You Got Me that was astounding and include a brief interlude into Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin. Absolutely incredbile.
http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/3742/apw11mi6.jpg
Black Thought.
http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/3790/apw12oh9.jpg
A shot of Radiohead from my spot Saturday night. The Roots ended 15 minutes before Radiohead started, combined with higher attendance on Saturday meant I was was WAY BACK. I just decided to get as far back as I could, sit down, relax and just enjoy the music.
I also caught Nicole Atkins, Animal Collective and the Black Angels but didn't take any pics. But it was a great time both days.

Radiohead was pretty awesome on Friday night. I enjoyed Idioteque.
I also enjoyed the Green booth where you collect bottles for rewards. Me and my girlfriend collectively got 3 t-shirts, a hat, and a book by collecting 160 bottles.
Also, the midway where you get tickets was pretty fun.
Mates of State were good as well as CSS.

These kind of things are usually pretty random, but it may not seem as random if each of the top 3 is a headliner for each of the days. Then they can fill out the rest of that days bill with acts that may make more sense.

Usually both. You can buy a 3 day pass, or buy individual days. Usually the 3 day passes go on sale first...
About how much were the tickets last year? Do you buy one and it works 3 days or do you buy for each day?
It was somewhere around $90 for a single day with the 3 day pass having a discount.

I hope they are a bit smarter about the stage lineups. Sticking Underworld between the New Pornographers and Radiohead last year was awkward.

Besides Beaties and YYYs, you've got Q-Tip, The Pharcyde and a re-united Organized Konfusion (Pharoahe Monch and Prince Poetry). I also really like the Knux. It's Hip-Hop heavy day.

Last year I went Friday and Saturday, this time I think I'll go Saturday and Sunday. Coldplay, Tool, Neko Case, My Bloody Valentine and The Black Keys? So there. And it's awesome they are adding the comedy acts. I can't wait to see Jim Jeffries and Tim and Eric live.
Maybe if I have some extra money around ticket time I'll get the 3 day. Q-Tip and Organized Konfusion are tempting but.....
After checking the prices I think I'll get the 3-day. It's $199. I'd be spending $178 for two days. Another $20 bucks for Friday is worth it.

I hope they are smart with their Friday lineup and put the 4 hip hop acts and MSTRKRFT on the same stage. If they do that I'll probably stay there all day. The only thing that might draw me away are the Yeah Yeah Yeahs but I could pass.

so, anyone else going to this tomorrow???
I'm typing this on my train ride home. Hip hop OWNED day one. Organized Konfusion was the best of the day. They did their set in the middle of a hard rain storm and they ripped the place apart, peaking with Simon Says as the rain was at its hardest. Just incredible. Q-Tip had such great energy and touched on all of tribe's best songs, wrapping up with award tour. And Jay-Z, fuck, I had no idea he was so good live. He had the hardest rocking set of the day. He opened with an awesome cover of no sleep til brooklyn and had the crowd all the way through.
Other than that I saw Heartless Bastards, The Knux, Seasick Steve, Telepathe, Xavier Rudd, and half of Vampire Weekend and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. All were good except for Telepathe who could only do half their set due to awful tech problems. Every act I saw at that stage had issues. But the only act that could hang with the top 3 was the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

did Vampire Weekend play half a set or just half the band? and of course jigga rules live, how would you not think that?
I only saw half of vampire weekend's and the yeah yeah yeah's sets. They both did full sets. The crowd was really loving them, and it was only helped by the fact they got to make the announcement that friday tickets would be good saturday or sunday because of the inclimate weather. They aren't my type of band but I enjoyed what I saw. They put on a good show.

Benny's go Home!!!
I spent the first few hours of day 2 exclusively in the comedy tent. Every one of the 3 big acts killed. Jim Jeffries was awesome. He had fun with the fact that there was a 12 year old girl and her younger brother in the front row enjoying his dirty act. Then it was Judah Friedlander who really worked the crowd to perfection. He didn't do his act from the stage, he came into the crowd and messed with the audience. I can see how his act might get tiresome after a while but this was my first experience with it and it was awesome. Then Tim and Eric. I don't even know what to say. I'll post pics later.
The first music act I saw was the Arctic Monkeys. I need to give them another chance because they were great. I was really enjoying it. Then I hopped over to see St. Vincent. This was a surprise. I had no idea who she was, I just wanted to ensure I had a good spot for Neko Case. But she surprised me not only with how much I liked it but the type of music. I don't think I could describe it if I tried. Then Neko Case. As long as she has that incredible voice its gonna be a good show. She did and it was.
Then My Bloody Valentine. Ugh. First of all no one in my section had any idea who they were. It took one song before they were pissed, asking why they couldn't heat vocals. This is a pretty divisive band and even I can only enjoy them when I can find music in the noise and I often fail in doing that. But they were not really well received. I took what I could out of it. I did enjoy some of it.
And Tool fucking ruled. But everyone knows that. Just incredible. I was so far away that all I could make out of the band was black silhouettes againt the video background which was a very cool effect. Keenan is great live. His voice was perfect.
I'm so fucking tired right now. I'm probably going to show up mid afternoon tomorrow. I couldn't get there as the gates opened again if I tried. I'm only interested in coldplay and silversun pickups anyway and I can get there in time for the pickups.

I'm so glad I did not go to this show. So tired of festival shows where you have to wait
all day in the mud with the smelly hippies and drunk, shirtless, sweaty dudes who have
bad musical taste and then rant loudly about the one band that is way over their
stupid, close-minded brains, and you can't enjoy the band you came to see
because you're surrounded by musical retards. Hey, sweaty
dudes, the rest of us don't want your cheap beer sweat on us, so
towel off! MBV RULES, ya dumb hayseeds.
Another thing about My Bloody Valentine: they were motherfucking LOUD. I was pretty far away and it still had my ears ringing. I have no idea how the people up front didn't go deaf. There was a constant stream of people walking past me away from the stage with hands over their ears. And, perhaps only because of MBV, they were handing out earplugs at the gate. They certainly didn't do that yesterday or last year.
I just wish I wasn't near a bunch of douchebags who booed after every song and yelled at girls to show their tits during songs. It definitely drew away from the performance.
bradleyjerome

I've seen My Bloody Valentine a few times, now. They hand the earplugs out at every show, because of liability reasons on the off chance that they hit the deafening-level dB during their "holocaust section" of You Made Me Realise.
I don't understand why they're booked for festivals. If you're a fan, they're a fantastic band that does their genre better than the rest, but its a small niche that basically harasses those that can't enjoy sonic walls of painful noise.

I went sat nite.
Gogol Bordello put on the best show, hands down.
Tool, amazing as always.
MBV- possibly the worst and annoying thing I've experienced. A pointlessly loud waste of time. Just a wall of noise. No meter, no tempo, nothing resembling a song.
Was actually offended by this bands gimmick.
Now that it's over I'd like to know what caused that fucking disgusting smell.
My Bloody Valentine is a very influential band. They developed techniques that other artists used in a much more palatable way. It's just an incredibly out there way of making music. They treat vocals not with any priority but just as any other instrument which is why they are difficult to hear most of the time but when it works in the background is very effective, IMO anyway. But it's the guitar work with distortion that sets them apart, and it why their live performances can be very volatile quality wise. But I was glad I had a chance to see them. When I can identify the music in the noise I absolutely love it.
Day 3 was a shitty, muddy mess. The early afternoon rain completely decimated any area of the park that wasn't already muddy. I got in around 5:30. The line getting was disgusting. The park was so bad that they stationed employees near the light rail station to keep people from going into the road to avoid a huge puddle. They said "Don't worry about it, the whole park is muddy. Your feet will get wet anyway."
I missed Silversun Pickups due to stupid NJ transit. My train was delayed 45 minutes because it took off too soon before a connecting train and had to go back for them. I was so fucking pissed. So I first saw We Are Scientists which was enjoyable. Then I saw Mogwai who were great. And then The Black Keys topped them both.
And then Coldplay placed themselves above every other act at the festival. They played every one of their big hits that surpassed the studio recordings in all but one instance. Midway through the show they ditched the stage for a mini-stage in the middle of the field and did a few acoustic songs. That was so cool of them. So many of us were far back all weekend and for these few songs we got a nice up close look. They did a couple of great and unconventional covers: Fight For Your Right To Party and Billie Jean. Fight For Your Right was Chris Martin solo on piano. And it fucking worked! Billie Jean was acoustic. And it worked too! Chris Martin really owned the crowd. He had everybody singing the final lines to Fix You and it sent chills down my spine. They ended the show on a perfect note. I was apprehensive about even going today because of the weather and the already shitty state of the park but they alone made it worth it. The rest of the great acts today were a bonus.
I'm so glad this has become a yearly thing. Although if I go next year I need a hotel. It was way too exhausting commuting 3 days in a row. The park is such a great venue with the views of Manhattan and Jersey City. As long as it doesn't rain, anyway.
My top 5 acts of the festival:
1. Coldplay
2. Organized Konfusion
3. Jay-Z
4. Tool
5. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Wow, I just found out that they didn't even open the doors today until 4:00 PM. Now I'm extremely glad I decided to go late now. But it sucks for the first couple bands at Bullet and Blue Comet and all the comedy acts who got cancelled.

08-03-2009, 03:02 AM
Well the park is surrounded by areas that are designated as Hazardous Waste, so that smell was probably just that. Also, the park was built on a landfill. It smelled like manure and at times I literally felt like cattle, especially in the opening gate where they shuffled us in with their cattle prods.
A lot of great acts this weekend, very eclectic.
