I realize this argument is very much like burn out v. fade away, however I'm not saying that bands that end up miles away from where they started are any worse, just way way different.
For me, and maybe this is immaturity, I'd rather have a band do 2 albums that are really tight style wise and quit, than do 6 albums and have the style of the sixth album be totally removed from the style of the first.
Rilo Kiley makes me think of this. I'll give back More Adventurous, an album I like, to erase Under the Black Light. On those older albums they play with different styles, but they're all that late 90's indie pop reading of those styles. By the time they hit the last two albums, they're really just doing something else. I respect the need for an artist to change, and I know how tired you get of a band that just starts remaking the same album (bouncing souls, I'm looking at you)
I like the mystique and romanticism of a band that does something really well and then disappears. I will anticipate the new project of a guy I like 10 times more than the 6th album of a band I love.
