Something really creepy happened to me Friday night. I went to a local pub that my buddies and I used to hang out at a lot more frequently in our younger days. I was meeting an old friend for a few drinks, and we thought we might see some familiar faces we hadn't seen in awhile.

While we were standing at the bar waiting for our drinks, some drunken mess wedges himself between us and starts up a conversation. He starts complaining about the music that's playing and says "I'm a metalhead...I like hard shit, like Slayer." Then he asks what type of music I like. I politely replied that I like a wide variety of music, but my first love is blues. He looked at me and asked "so you love n*ggers?"

I guess the look on my face was so incredulous that he felt the need to repeat the question. I told him I don't love or hate anyone based on their race and that I generally get along with lots of different types of people. Then he showed my friend and I a tattoo on his hand. It was a cross with some weird symbol around it and he said "I'm KKK baby. Take a look around you...know where you are."

I have no idea what he was talking about. I knew exactly where I was; in the town I grew up in, 10 minutes outside of New York City.

My buddy and I looked at each other for a second, not sure exactly how to handle the situation. If he wasn't so drunk I might have engaged him further, but I decided the best thing to do was put some space between us. I excused myself and went to the other side of the bar and my friend followed.

It's just really creepy that in 2008 something like that happens.

I have to know where you went. What bar? Was it in Teaneck or Edgewater? PM it if you don't wanna post it. This guy probably had his rig parked somewhere on 46! I hate white trash.

Sad but true. They are everywhere.

Even up here where we are mostly white, and would give nobody the reason to be worried or bothered by people of different race, color etc..

Was that guy Italian?

If he was it would've been great to do the "True Romance" speech on him.

Maybe something like "Racists are everywhere" might be more appropriate. There are lots of rednecks who are not racist. DO you really think because you live 10 minutes from NYC, there are no racists? I grew up near NYC as well and can remember many a time when whites and blacks did not get along (the 1970's comes to mind).

People all over the world, rich, poor, educated, uneducated, religious, non-religious, city dwelling and country dwelling are racist.

Most of the "country people" I work with and live near are just good people. They don't go out of their way to 'hate' anybody.

A couple of years ago I was at a bar in DC when these guys started harassing this chick (white) who was with a guy (black). One of them was a dead ringer for that fat skinhead from American History X, the other looked like the product of a brother and sister. They started calling her a mudshark and other vile shit. But, before things could escalate, the bouncers saw this and threw them out.

I found out later that they from Front Royal, VA: one of the redneckiest parts of the state. I love guys like this who think they are racially superior -- yet they dwell in the lowest strata of inbred white trash.

I wonder how they feel about the Obama campaign...

We have differing definitions of redneck. I live in Arkansas and I've honestly never seen anything that racist happen in public. I've seen a shit load of rednecks though. My favorite redneck is the one wearing tight sweats and some form of sleeveless shirt.

meant a medium between those in pain looking for answers and those with

If you're really being serious, honestly this is the wrong forum for a thread like this. "That's Life," as with the "rule" that you posted, is referring to people, for the most part, opting to want to unload or discuss specific personal issues or problems here, not general musings or observations on the social structure of America. This thread really belongs in the P&CF forum.

"KKK" is just a way to easily verbalize your 16th century racism. I doubt the KKK exists in NJ. I'm actually surprised that the guy would even associate himself with the KKK.

I think for me as soon as you say KKK, I'm going to think it's someone from the south, and thus, a redneck.

While racism and the KKK are all over the country, those two things are pretty much synonymous in America's psyche.

bigredd
03-03-2008, 04:43 PM
I think the word redneck carries a lot of different meanings, more than likely determined in each case by context. A redneck can be as simple as a guy with a sweet mullet all the way to full blown skinhead. Living in Arkansas most of my life I'd like to say I've seen everyone on both ends of the spectrum though I've never seen anything as troubling as GVAC's deal. Maybe I haven't been paying attention. Some of you would probably consider me a redneck when seen in my natural environment. I sell lumber for a living, have chewed tobacco regularly, have a southern drawl, drive a pickup truck and have few more than my fair share of cattle and even castrated a few. GVAC was well within the rights of the word.

Years ago, my mom accused me of being a blackneck. It was the middle of a summer of outdoor labor and she said the skin on the back of my neck was almost black. Now there's little "skin-tags" behind my ears, and I'm only 31 years young. My later years are going to be a treat. I might look like the judge in Nothing But Trouble.

Like Edward Norton said in American History X "I'm not a member of the fuckin' low rent, disorganized, redneck Ku Klux Klan"

From the Partial Observer:

The Ku Klux Klan is generally accepted as the premier white supremacist organization with 162 loosely related organizations in the U.S. Lawsuits and infiltration by the FBI have greatly reduced the once formidable influence of the Klan in the South. However today, the Klan has chapters in places that you would not associate with its southern tradition. Places such as Portage, Indiana; Newport Beach, California; Cincinnati, Ohio; and believe it or not, Washington, D.C.

The shock troops of the white supremacist groups are the skinheads. Skinheads are a European import. Characterized by their shaved heads, black Don Marten's boots, racist tattoos and jeans supported by suspenders, skinheads move around a lot hoping for the race war they believe will someday come. Although small compared to other groups I have listed, skinheads are the most violent. Skinheads operate in crews moving around from city to city. There are approximately 48 skinhead groups, with a large concentration of skinheads in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Pissers are steamers. I've always wanted to try razors, they are supposed to be fantastic.

This weekend we went down to Hog Island Oysters and got a couple of pounds of their Manilas. They pull all their shellfish out of the bay and finish them for 24 hours in tanks, which flushes all the grit out of 'em. Pristine shellfish. So I sauteed some shallots, added some garlic, deglazed with white wine and chicken stock, steamed the clams quickly, then finished with a knob of butter and a little italian parsley. Right about then is when a loaf of my half-perfected sourdough came out of the oven, and it was a glutton fest from there.

Well handled shellfish have opiatic qualities.

It really stinks that a place you grew up in has become infested with racists. A place known to you as safe and familiar is now a dangerous, foreign place.

As dispicable as these KKK assholes are, you can see them coming a mile away, they give themselves away with their ignorant comments, tatoos and overall appearance. The ones that worry me the most are more educated, mainstream racists who hide behind respectablity and do more damage behind the scenes.
