I was watching Bob Dylan in Pat Garrett and Billy the kid. He was not a great actor but it got me thinking who was the best musician to crossover? Elvis and Sinatra dont really count cause they sang in most of the movies they made. I think the buddies talked about this one day.
My vote goes to Mark Wahlberg

Not the best, but the coolest drummer ever, Levon Helm, had two great performances, in Coal Miner's Daughter, and just killed as Ridley in 'The Right Stuff'
IMDB says hes in 'Shooter'

Wahlberg is a better actor than musician. Tom Waits belongs on the short list too.

Justin Timberlake in ALPHA DOG was actually really good. I was impressed.

Not that I'm a country music fan, but Dwight Yoakam is pretty good and he was huge in the country scene.
Mark Wahlberg has to be the biggest actor from a "singer" even though he was only "Markie Mark" for a short time. His brother Donnie from New Kids on the Block is pretty good as well.
I'm speaking of their talent as actors, mind you.
As far as big time/popular singers...Jon Bon Jovi. (He's actually a pretty good actor too)
Cher...she won an oscar for Moonstruck and has had some other big films too.
Mandy Moore has some acting talent as well and was huge with the teenie bops.
But as far as the biggest music star to turn actor or actress...it has to be Madonna...even though she isn't that great of an actress (though she did get critical acclaim for "Evita") she's definitely the biggest musician to get into acting and kind of make something of it.
That's all I've got off the top of my head.

Damn - you stole Mos-Def from me. He has really impressed me with his acting ability and range. I think he does Comedy the best, but 'Mos' is no slouch when it comes to Drama either.

Not a huge role, but the fight was good.

Hell, what about The Manchurian Candidate and From Here to Eternity? Not counting Frank is nuts.

I know I'll get shit on for this but I dig Chris Isaak both as a performer and the quirky acting roles that he's taken on.

Tom Waits is entertaining, even though he always just plays himself.
Method Man is awesome on The Wire.

Mickey Jones - Played with Dylan ( and what became 'The Band') prior to Levon Helm. He was there when the boys were booed every night. Texan by birth, Mickey Jones joined the Dylan/Hawks tour in the spring of 1966. He played all over Europe, Australia, etc... He was much more wild on the drums than the ultimate 'folk-drummer,' Levon Helm, but he was playing with Robertson and Danko before Levon was. He stopped playing with Dylan at the end of the 1966 tour. If you look him up on the imdb, you'll see he has been in everything and if you look at him today, you'll think, "Oh yeah, that guy." Great drummer, terrific Southern- colloquialism actor.
Mickey Jones clearly is better than all others in this category of musician turned actor.

Jon Bon Jovi has done pretty well as an actor. Another musician turned actor that I personally like is Flea. I see him in alot of movies but the roles are usually fairly small.

Will Smith.
Not that anybody asked, but as far as women: Barbara Streisand, Bette Midler or Dolly Parton.

If I wanna make a basket full of money on a popcorn movie, then yes I'll hire Will Smith.
If I wanna make a serious film....umm....not so much.

Actually, the title is "the best". Will Smith is the best at making money, but he's not the best actor.

I thought Will Smith was pretty good in Six Degrees of Separation.

I'd say Barbara Streisand followed by Gregory Hines. They both did pretty well.
