I've been in Utah a couple of times for different matters, and I remember getting a whiskey at a bar, having it be really small, and asking for a double, and they said, we can't.
So I ordered another one right away.
Hey, at least the size of the shot went up.

It's the principle of the thing. Maryland is no beer in supermarkets, and no 7-11s etc. Liquor stores are closed on Sunday.
When I lived in VA it was possible, but you had to buy Liquor from the state at the ABC. PA has some bizarre laws, too.

Friend of mine went to Salt Lake City on Business. He couldnt order at a bar unless he was "sponsored". He had to get a local yokel tell the bartender that they approved him for drinks. WTF?

Craziness! I work for a company that's based out of Utah and many of the employees, including the board members, are Mormon. My experience with working with Mormons has always been pleasant, but lately it's driving me crazy. My company changed over the summer and launched a whole new set of deals (I'm in vitamin sales) and things have gotten so confusing and restrictive that I'm starting to dread going to work. I get laughed out of stores a lot. Our competitors keep things painfully simple.
I feel bad for these bartenders... having to keep track of specifically what everyone's drinking and ordering, when I'm sure drinkers are going to try to get one past them every chance they get, and get loud after a few drinks.

Utah will become the only state to ban wine coolers and flavored malt beverages from grocery stores. Instead, they will be sold only in state liquor stores.
"I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that these alcopops are directed to our kids. It is a gateway drug," said Rep. Mike Noel, R-Kanab.In addition, bar patrons' option of ordering an additional 1-ounce shot to pour in their drinks, known locally as a sidecar, is being eliminated. Customers will still be able to order shots while they have a drink on the table, but only if it is of a liquor that's not already in their drink.
THIS DOES NOTHING. And glad to see wine coolers are gateway drugs. To everyone I knew under 21, even wine coolers were gay. NOBODY DRINKS THAT SHIT

In British Columbia we have to buy all of our liquor either through government liquor stores, which close @ 6pm. The only other option is to go to what we call cold beer and wine stores but they jack the prices up. And we already pay at least twice as much for our alcohol in Canada as you lucky people do in the USA.
What is the point of only allowing you to have shots of alcohol that differ from your highball? That is how people get really fu**ed up, by mixing booze.

You have to get a SIDECAR. I learned this when I was there for business. For example, you get a Jack and coke, you can't get a double, they have to give you a regular jack and coke, and a little shot of Jack on the side. It's ridiculous.
EDIT - oh snap, I just saw they are getting rid of the afforementioned side car

If you read the article they have outlawed the "sidecar". Now instead of ordering the extra shot they have changed the size of the shot from 1 oz. to 1.5 oz. Hopefully they keep the prices the same.

Yeah, they got rid of it and made it much safer. Now, if you're drinking something with tequila in it and want more liquor, you have to drink another liquor. Mixing liquor is a good idea!

That was South Carolina, I believe. But they stopped that practice.

Now Jersey is on fucked up state!
Dirty, Smelly, Skanky, East Side Daves origin!
As a former SLC resident now in Las Vegas.
Utah bars do not use the mini bottles. they use a measuring device that measures 1oz. It screws on to the bottle.
You can order a side car for more $ which sucks ass, but if you are fairly well do do and not a broke ass welfare case from Jersey you'll be ok. Now you can buy regular beer and shit in liquor stores but they all close by 10pm. So you need to plan ahead and buy your shit before you go out. If you have more brains than a NJ cunt you can make the BS system work.
Besides the great thing about salt lake city is, when you fall down to puke in the gutter, you will marvel in the amazing cleanliness of the streets. Not a single piece of trash, well unless there is a Jersey girl already laying there.
Utah is a beautiful and clean state and for those who have been there, they will agree.

30 miles away in Starkville, MS (MSU) the city council closed alcohol sales at midnight. You couldn't buy beer after midnite anywhere in the city. You had to down your beer quickly at midnight at the bar or have it taken from you by the waitstaff. The bars stayed open til 3am so you could sober up (the only reasonable part) before driving home. You could not buy cold beer anywhere in the city at any time and liquor was sold in liquor stores only.
Every year the students fought city council for cold beer and lost. city council's reasoning was that if you couldn't buy cold beer, nobody would drink and drive and it would reduce drinking overall in the city. What happened was we always had fridges stocked with beer "just incase". Columbus sold cold beer and the sold it til 1am. Between midnight and 1am there would be a stream of cars heading back and forth between Starkville and Columbus to buying cold beer and trying to drink the beer on the way home before it gets warm.
You can now buy cold beer in Starkville and they are now working on Sunday sales.
<a href="http://www.betterstarkville.com/"><img src="http://www.betterstarkville.com/bannerwide.jpg" alt="Support Sunday alcohol sales in Starkville. Click here!" style="border-color: #FFD307; border-width: 4px; 4px; 4px; 4px;"></a>
Now, I can buy cold beer 7 days/week in Maryland at the liquor store, which is really convenient because it's either an extra trip or an extra stop outside of grocery shopping. At least I can buy it at the "drive thru window" and I don't get carded anymore.

Reading the old posts made me laugh. I actually worked at a bar once in NJ that enforced the same rules. It was a chain restuarant called 99. Worst place I ever worked. With all these liquor rules I eventually asked, "How am I gonna get anyone in here to have a drink?" Their reply was "We dont want people getting drunk in here. Were here so they can maybe have one drink with dinner." I walked out immediately.
