Hey All,
Since I have been spoiled by always living in New York, I never needed to take my permit test or even think about cars.
But the time is soon approaching for me to wake the fuck up and realize that not everywhere is like New York (thank god).
I am taking my permit test soon and don't know a thing about it. I've studied and pretty much know what I need to know, but no one has been able to give me any real information on it except that "it's so fucking easy"
Does anyone know how long it takes for me to get my permit after I actually pass the test??
I know in NJ they just fucking give you your ID right there on the spot, but New Yorkers have to fucking wait like 3 weeks for any kind of ID.
Does anyone remember how long it took to get their NY permit??
I know it's a long shot, since most normal people take their permit test at 15 or 16.
Thankies.

Like jauble said, I'm not in NY. But in VA, you walk out with a permit as soon as you pass the test.

You can get a permit quick. You can go take the test anytime, just walk into the dmv. Then you have to take a 5 hour class in order to schedual a road test.
the time of the road test really depends on the test date available. It could be a week or a month, maybe more. You could also pay your instructor a fee, and he can get you the soonest possible date. My instructer got me a date within 4, 5 days, where when i called myself, they said it would take at least 4 weeks.

New York city is different than NY state... but i got my permit right away.
Once you have the permit... just start practicing all the time. I will volunteer my services (and car) .... since I am currently unemployed and have daytimes relatively free. All you need to practice is a licensed driver and a car. I depended on my dad and my boyfriend at the time to take me driving. And it helped.
so best of luck on your permit test! and call ( or PM) me if you would like to practice.
aww.. our Leticia is growing up!

Ooooooh,
awesome.
See!? I don't understand why all the other states get their permits the same day they take the test!!!
It works that way with regular ids. People bring in their info and then get their fucking ID right away. I get a fucking piece of paper saying that it will be arriving in the mail in 3-4 weeks and to use this paper as proof (and no one ever accepts the fucking piece of paper for any reason)
Chris has a car, so I'll also be practicing on his, but I would fucking loooove to practice with other people!!!!!!
Yay Friday!!!!!! It would be great to get other people's pointers and help. (and I can't only depend on Chris, cause he uses his car quite often)
Our wedding and honeymoon is only in a month and a half and we're road tripping California!!! So I want to have my permit by then.
I looked into it and my permit would let me drive with Chris in Cali. :) :)
Maybe we can have a yell at Leticia while she learns to Drive party!!!
lol.

Yaaaaaaay. I took the test today and passed it. Yaaaaaayy.
As I suspected, NY is stupid and gave me a paper saying it counts as a permit up until i get my real permit in the mail in 3 weeks.
Also something I didn't know.
In NJ permits are just pieces of paper??
In NY they are actual IDs. Like a state ID or a license...
Either way, yaaaaaay.
Now I can drive during our honeymoon in california, where we have a convertable reserved for us!!!!
PS...
Sorry this isn't a poll.

You will not be allowed to drive out of state on a permit. You must have a license.
As for taking the road test, you will have a backlog in NYC. You will be able to schedule your road test at any facility in the state. You may want to check upstate for a date. By shopping around you can cut the wait period for a test dramatically

But I checked before I even got my permit!!!
It said I can use it there!!!
The only thing is there are restriction on when and where I can drive.
But I CAN drive in Cali.
As long as Chris is next to me with his license, which won't be an issue since it's our honeymoon.
Effective January 1, 2006, you must be accompanied and supervised by a licensed parent, guardian, other licensed driver 25 years of age or older, or a licensed or certified driving instructor when you:
* Transport passengers under 20 years of age at any time for the first twelve months.
* Drive between 11 PM and 5 AM for the first twelve months.
-Taken From California DMV website.
Chris is 25.
AAAAnd the only restriction I saw against out of state licenses were for people under the age of 18.
So I think I'll be ok.
Let me know if you find any proof that says otherwise.

everyone should have their license. city folk or not.
its just an easy ID to have.
Leticia

Believe it or not, it just never occurred to me to have one.
No one told me I should have one, and getting aroud was actually easier without a car, so I never even thought about having to drive one.
I just thought that I would get one when I was 21 or something incase I wanted to rent a car when I was 25 and have a road trip.
You'd be surprised how unimportant driver's licenses seemed to us.
And by us I don't mean New Yorker, just the people I hung around with.
From what I heard then, driving in the city was more trouble than it was worth anyway.
I only later on that transportation is not available everywhere the way it is here.
(except for atually driving from one state to another.)
Oh, aaaand, you'd also be surprised at how NOT easy of an id it is for me. Most people grow up around cars and learn things that seem obvios to them later on when they take the test.
No one in my family had a car and I didn't know ANYTHING about driving. So I leterally had to start from scratch.

I think you're confused...
There's a difference between a driver's license and an ID.
Since I was 15 I had a State ID. Which is required.
But it is not required to have a driver's license.
It's called a non-driver ID.
That's a normal ID for most New Yorkers.
That's the kind of thing I mean when I say we're different ID wise here.
You had to learn how to drive just to get an ID???
THAT seems crazy to me.
I can show proof of identification without having to know how to drive.

They'll let you drive a RENTAL CAR with a LEARNER'S PERMIT in CA? Honestly, that's an eyebrow-raiser and I think that's what Hottub was getting at.
Just because you can legally use your permit in CA doesn't necessarily mean it can be used in a RENTAL CAR.
I think you should check with the rental car company too, not just with the CA DMV. It may be legal for you to drive a car someone OWNS with your permit in CA because of reciprocating services, but it may NOT be legal for you to drive a car you will be RENTING.
Also, be sure that your hubby-to-be's car insurance covers you too. You wouldn't want something bad to happen and not be covered ... or have his insurance get screwed up because neither of you checked the coverage.

In NYS you can buy and register a car with a permit...but your insurance will suck!!!
Good Luck with the Test.

That's not the point.
Rental Car Companies' rules can be a ton stricter than state DMV rules to cover their asses. That's part of the reason why they usually won't rent to anyone under 25 ... or will charge you an arm and a leg for additional liability coverage if you absolutely MUST rent a car NOW (I know this from experience, having rented cars when I was under 25 myself) or why you have to pay extra for a second authorized driver on your car... which is part of the reason why, when Matt & I are on vacation, I don't drive. (I'm usually not listed as an authorized driver on our rentals.)

This is leticia on Chris's name...
The car rental will be under Chris's name and he's ensured.
So I have the premission to drive out there.
I never said I was gonna be the one renting the car.
I know that. I wouldn't put my name as one of the drivers for a rental.
You can't rent a car weith a permit in NY either.
The rules are however, that I can ride as long as I am with someone who is 25 years or older with a liscence that is at least 1 year old.
I am obeying those laws already. I called and made sure.
So I'll be fine.
Thanx for your advice guys.
I made 100% sure that I would be ok.
The only way it would be wrong is if I tried renting the car under my name (I don't know any state that would rent to someone without a liscence active for less than a year)
And we are prepared to be very careful and good about this.
I'm also sure that if Chris would have told the rental company that I would have been driving it, they wouldn't have let him rent.
So there!
