I just finished up reading The Catcher in the Rye. This was a book I read in high school and reread it again. Am I missing something with this book? I do not see the brilliance or symbolism that supposedly this book holds. I found it to be an alright read but it has gone down as a classic that was banned at one point and I do not see why this was thought of as a great book? Maybe someone can enlighten me?

Did you go into reading this while thinking "if I shot the President - Jodie Foster would SO want to sleep with me!"?
If not, its just a book.

Maybe it is my age which does not let me appreciate this book.

are you 14?
do you believe that the wizard of oz would be nearly as entertaining if you first saw it at 40?
seriously..why do you think its required reading in most jr highs/highschools.... not graduate students.

Yes if I saw Wizard of Oz when I was 40 I would still enjoy the message it put forth. I see no substance in this book to be considered a classic if you were 14 or 40. There has been many books I enjoyed when I was young and still do now ..ie "The Little Prince". If it was just a timely piece than maybe I am just ignorant.

All the people who love the book tend to identify with Holden Coulfield..Unless you fancy yourself destined for some type higher calling, it won't speak to you.. It spoke to me.. It said.. "This goddamn book.." cause that's the way the book speaks,it's got a fresh mouth..It said,"This goddamn book is nothing more then a paper wieght..Put it on top of some papers so they don't blow away when someone opens a window..If it were a snub nosed .38,I would tell you to shot John Lennon.. If it where a cowbell I would tell you to..." That's when I closed it I couldn't listen to that thing yap on any longer..
