Add this to my list. Fuck this country to death.
I will say I commend those in China fighting against injustices like these.
Absolutely villainous behavior. They are truly a country of heartless scum.
There is so much wrong with that country and the sham they are trying to produce for the Olympics that it's a travesty that there isn't more of protest against it. there ought to be athlete boycotts.

This pic would be funny if it wasn't true... Wait, It's still kinda funny.
When I was in Jordan I realized that in parts of the developing world, cats are like squirrels. The eat garbage, run rampant, and are dangerously thin. It's sad that China's handling it in such a heartless way, but they probably are loaded with disease well before they're picked up by animal control. This is a country with a one-child policy, by the way, so on the pecking order of bizarre and cruel methods of Chinese population control, I'm gonna put human beings right at the top.

I am not defending China, but the title seems a little misleading. The article doesn't explain the actual rate of disease in the cat population, unless I missed it. But it does say that the Gov. is not killing the sick cats, rather just letting them die. There is only specualtion on the cats actually being killed in the camps. Fuck, the people eat cats and dogs, so I don't see how all of a sudden allegedly killing a bunch of them is that much worse. And to think, these are the people that will be taking over the world.

China's also shooting themselves in the foot from a practical point of view. They're eliminating a natural predator of rats, which I imagine are completely out of control in such poorly planned cities as the major coastal Chinese cities

I have no problem with human euthanasia if indeed the cat population is out of control, if its done with respect and dignity. Letting cats rot to death in tight cages in crammed dark rooms is not how human beings treat animals.
And as disease carriers go, you could do worse than cats. They're not like rats. While toxoplasmosis is certainly a life threatening disease, its more likely rats and insects would be carriers than their predators.
But it has nothing to do with disease. If it was a matter of disease, these cats would be humanely destroyed. Instead, like the article says, they are left to rot or beaten to death with clubs and bats.
I find it insulting that this is the solution to their "cat problem". Misinformation, beatings, torture. New York City, Los Angeles, London...they all have a feral cat problem, yet you don't see ANYTHING like this in a civilized country.
The Chinese beat animals to death on the street. I hate them.

Why anyone would go to this country to play a game or throw a ball with what they do to their people is beyond me. Shame on them, and shame on whoever watches them on the TV, and shame on the TV networks for broadcasting it.

Just to highlight the difference between Chinese animal-hating pieces of garbage and this fine country:
http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/15541930/detail.html
70 "disease carriers" taken to their local Humane society for treatment and adoption.
G-d I love this country when it comes to our animals. We don't have the best track record, I'll give you that, but we sure as hell harder than most.
How we treat our animals speak to our character as human beings. It's obvious the Chinese are the ultimate consumption culture, raping their local environment and exterminating endangered and common household critters alike withour reservation in their desperate race to become a world power.

Our people have no problem keeping 70 cats in a house. And what we did to the buffalo was great. Read Fast Food Nation to see how we treat animals.
People are upset coz it's cats, and our society has demed cats cute and worthy of living. They're precisely and exactly as worthy of living as a chicken or cow, but if you're one of them, you're fucked. Cats are cuter/smarter then a chicken or cow? Bull; thats our bias.
As to consumption culture, they learned well from us.

Its true that us people are loaded with hypocrisy on this. I have 2 dogs who I love and treat like children, and yet I run a bakery where I (by law) have to kill mice on a regular basis. The same people who are outraged by this would never frequent my business if it was loaded with rodents, and would support the laws which force me to hire an exterminator on a regular basis.
All of that being said, this should be done more humanely. But the fact of the matter is most of China is 3rd world country and these may be the only methods available to them. We're applying our western standards to a 3rd world country and its really not fair.

I could really give 2 shits about cats in China. They are not pets like they are here. We need to worry about our own country. They have their culture and we have ours. Americans love dogs, horses even cats ( I hate cats) but in other countries they are food. Jews dont eat pork, but its food to most of us. Cows are regarded highly in some cultures yet we eat them. If I went to China Id give anything a try once, who are we to say they can or cant kill ever cat in China?
If you want to worry about something outside our borders, then worry about human life.

I am a cat person. And it breaks my heart over and over to see these photos and read these stories time and time again. But Mike has a point.
Our culture is one that values cats and dogs as pets worthy of love and protection. But this is not the case everywhere. And if I am going to be concerned with inhumane acts happening in China....like Snacks I would have to choose to focus on the Human Beings victimized there every day.
We, as Americans, tend to think that we are always right. But the rest of the world would say different. They already do.

All meat consuming countries have similiar animal neglect stories. I'm not ignorant to this fact. All things are equal, we all have blood on our soul when it comes to slaughtering animals for food.

Cows and chickens were always considered food. Where was this this rampant cat problem prior Olympic games? ? It didn't exist. And to even further their hypocrisy, these supposed carriers of disease make it into their own food supply.
This is not a simple matter of we're just as bad as them. I'm sorry, we're not. We may be bastards to our food animals, but we're constant bastards. We're not the kind of people who go, oh you know, today, dogs and cats are evil and worth eating.
It's not about cute, it's about all of a sudden labelling an animal as a pest to instigate a clean up for a huge media event such as Olympics. It is a means to an end, to project an image of a clean China the world can marvel at, when the truth of the matter is, they are window dressing a dirty, crowded, enviromental disaster, and the animals are just one of many who suffer the collateral damage of that fabrication.
i've never wished to to have more chinaman live on my street before, until now.
i have two (TWO) crazy cat-fuckers that feed at least two dozen half-wild toxoplasmosic alley cats on my street. they shit all over my yard, they sit on my deck and torture my dogs all day, and they shit all over my yard. did i mention they shit? there's a difference between cats like the one your girlfriend has and the feral vermin that i have to deal with.

Have to have a China-man do it do ya?
Go beat them to death yourself if they annoy you so much. Can't bring yourself to do it? Hard to take a life in that fashion isn't it?
I wonder why you can't beat a cat to death in this country. Oh yeah, it's against the law. You can't beat anything to death in this country.

Cats are cute and off limits in the USA coz we say so, and we decide to not eat them, because theyre cute. Ditto with dogs. Big eyes = you're safe
We have another wonderful cute furry animal in the USA; humans domesticated it, it provides us with clothing, and we have no problem whatsoever eating it. Why? Because this society says it's OK. You dont know what animal I'm talking about, admit it. Yeah you.

Like I said, it may be against the law, but our people have no problem at all stockpiling dozens of pets. For every one of these caught, how many more?

Mike, I have to strongly disagree with you here. I'm surprised b/c I'm usually in accord with your viewpoints.
I don't anyone in this country would agree with you that "stockpiling dozens" of pets is the norm. I can see three or four animals in a home, maybe, but dozens? Besides the fact that's its cost prohibitive, its generally accepted as unhygenic, not to mention illegal.
Of course, you will have the occassional nut or animal lover found here and there, but that's hardly representative of the American population.
There is a huge pet control movement in this country. Los Angeles just passed the first pet sterilization requirement law. Celebrities like Bob Barker and people of his ilk have been preaching sterilization for years. I for one have spent over 500 hundred dollars sterilizing local feral cats around my home.
In fact, I have a kitten ready to go if anyone is looking. I'll post a thread on that later when she's all ready to go.
My point is, we do the best we can with the resources available. The Chinese don't even try. They just eliminate, and not euthanize, they discard...like so much trash. Or they torture.
Give us a little credit.
You call it extermination, I call it hospitality.
They've gotta feed all those visiting foreigners somehow.

why would they? they have 1 billion people living there and they dont give a shit about them. Why should they spend money finding homes or keeping them alive? They need to spend time and money on people first. I think they should kill every cat they can find. Feed the poor with the meat. Let China do what they want with their pets or pests. I would worry more about the people and them not having anything. People first, animals 2nd or 3rd.

I think it's all a matter of perspective. Does our treatment of rats make us inhumane? You can argue that rats spread disease, therefor must be eliminated, but they are just as much a living animal as cats are. I say this as someone who has two cats.

It has also clearly backfired. If they were hoping to 'clean up their image' for the games by doing this large scale killing of the cats, they've only ended up hurting their image further with all the bad publicity.
This is on top of all the bad press about the dog killings, poisonous children's toys, contaminated pet food, etc, etc. China is the poster boy for bad behavior on the world stage. Maybe all of this exposure will lead them to clean up their act. They were an insular, communist country for a very, very long time.
