Anyone here a pilot? I'm thinking of finally getting my pilots license once we get settled in NY and I'd love to hear any recs on flight schools.
Best Airfield?
Best Flight school?
All that fun stuff.
Oh ya...and here ya go....

People became disgruntled when they realized this had nothing to do with drugs. Maybe next time Flyboy.

I fly an average of three to four days a week for a living. Where in NY are you interested in starting? I did all my flight training in New York ('upstate' and Long Island) and I'm based in JFK now.

Well I'm moving to Queens in a few weeks so I've been looking at Flight Schools out on Long Island as well as a few in Jersey. Once I get settled I plan on making a few trips out to the various airfields to check out the programs for myself.
What were the names of the schools you went to in Upstate and Long Island?
Any advice if I should just pony up and go for commercial multi prop or go for the private pilot license first.
Thanks again.

I flew at Orange County Airport in Montgomery (by Newburgh) and Republic Airport in Farmingdale. Having your Private Pilot license is a requirement to getting your Commercial Pilot license. If your looking at it becoming a career or to become an Instructor, then it typically follows this progression:
Private License ---> Instrument Rating (not a seperate license, it adds on to your Private) ---> Commercial License (Instrument Rating will transfer to Commercial as you are no longer a Private Pilot) ---> Commercial Multi-Engine (again, not a seperate license just an add on so you can fly for pay in more than just single engine airplanes) ---> Certified Flight Instructor.
If you have time to spare, I say go the FBO (Fixed Base Operator) route. A small Mom and Pop flight school is tailored to your needs and schedule and is normally cheaper. If you want to make it a career and feel the need to rush and get into the industry before oil hits 200 a barrel and cripples the industry (and the country) then a fast paced program is the way to go. But fair warning, those programs cost $70-80,000 and are *extremely* bare boned in terms of the knowledge they give you. Its like public education these days.. teaching you to pass the test, not necessarily stuff that will be useful.
If your just interested in getting your Private license, it usually takes an average of 45-70 hours of flight training and a cost of about $8-15,000 depending on where you go, what airplane you decide to rent, and how diligent you are in showing up prepared and how much home study (Free!) you do.
Feel free to PM me if you'd like.

What make it worse than your average Jezo thread is the picture. With the title, and the picture, I thought it was about a airline where the flight attendants dressed like the women in the picture.

Mike- Awesome pictures.. I'm jealous.
And yes, we do need more pilots. It's becoming harder and harder to find quality flight instructors because all of the flight instructors are ditching the low paying job to become regional airline pilots (another low paying job.)
When I was a CFI (Flight Instructor) I made 19/hr. Sure that sounds great, but I only got paid for time the engine was running or I was in front of the classroom teaching. I would put in 10-12 hour days and make about 4 hours pay. It's alot of sitting around, and entirely dependant apon the weahter.
As a regional airline pilot, my first year I made $21,000. I was away from home roughly 18 nights a month and I live on Long Island. God bless my EXTREMELY understanding girlfriend and my roomate who also works for a different regional airline. He made $18,000 his first year at the job. Thankfully there is a fairly large pay increase after the first year... but lets just say it'll be at least 4-5 years after getting hired that I'll hit over 60k. Hopefully I'll have gotten a job at a larger company at that point, where I'll start at the bottom of their seniority list and go back to low first year pay.
It's the only professional job that when you move up in the world you have to give up your seniority and pay. Lawyers move to a larger firm and get more prestige and higher pay. Pilots lose seniority and start at the bottom of the payroll again.
I am not complaining, I knew this getting into it. It's the life I live because I love travel and flying. I'm also not able to sit in an office all day.
Right now, regionals are desperate for pilots as the major airlines are starting to hire again. Any merger or bankruptcy will cripple all movement for jobs in this industry. I beg you to say NO to any merger idea you hear in the news or papers. It is only good for upper management and shareholders. You will end up paying higher fares and have to put up with oversold and full flights (more so then now.) It's just not good for anyone but those who already have golden parachutes.
Sorry.. heh heh.. rant over.

I'm in the process of trying to become an air traffic controller, but if that fails, I'm going to go to school to become a pilot.
When I went to Vieques this winter, we had to take a tiny plane from San Juan to Vieques, and I got to sit directly behind the pilot. It was the fucking greatest thing ever. Absolutely changed what I wanted to do with my life.
