House- About a doctor named Dr. Gregory House
New Amsterdam- About a cop named JOHN AMSTERDAM
Canterbury's Law- About a lawyer named ELIZABETH CANTERBURY
Its really stupid.
House could have been called House Calls.
And as for the other's, I blame Grey's Anatomy with the whole play on words thing. Cause you know the same types of thought process went into both:
"'You know doctor's read a book called 'Grey's Anatomy.' Let's have our doctor called 'Meredith Grey' and call it 'Grey's Anatomy.'"
"We're doing a show about an immortal who has lived in New York for 400 years. At one point, the city was called New Amsterdam. Let's call the show New Amsterdam, and call the guy Amsterdam."
We're just lucky Canterbury's Law wasn't a show about a guy named Logan Black, and called "Black's Law Dictionary."

24 - Now there is a title that is not reflective of the names of any characters, locations or the plot of the show. It represents the concept/format of each season, so it could have been any kind of show that is spread over a 24 hour period, even a comedy. And it's on Fox! They didn't call the show Bauer or CTU. I sometimes call it the Jack Bauer Power Hour. Tee Hee! /norton
Some Titles I like:
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Arrested Development
Life on Mars (Maybe my favorite title ever)
John from Cincinnati (This would not be a good title if it was actually about a guy named John from Cincinnati)
More examples of no imagination (In the title, some of the shows are very good{or at least started out good}):
The Sopranos
Battlestar Galactica
South Park
The Office
30 Rock
Heroes
Bionic Woman
Entourage
My Name is Earl

Married with children......about a guy married with children, etc etc,
so just out of curiosity what would you like shows to be named, about stuff that has NOTHING to do with the actual concept.
DEEP IN SPACE - About an asian guy who owns a laundromat in astoria queens, and the crazy hi-jinx he gets caught up in?
Butternut squash- A semi-pro hockey player who's alcohol obsessed ex girlfriend runs a child pornography ring and he's finding the clues to close her down?
And Butt Grease and Thumbtacks- Chevy chase's character from spies like us, is re-visited to see what wacky anticks he's been up to?
devils advocate, someone hadda do it

I think there is a difference between the first three mentioned (House, New Amsterdam, and Canterbury's Law), then the others mentioned, because of the play on words/ideas thing I pointed out before.
If New Amsterdam was just about a guy named Amsterdam then it wouldn't be a problem. But it's about a guy who actually lived in New York, when it was called New Amsterdam, and the guy has that name.
House isn't House Calls, but you have to imagine that's where they were going with it. And Canterbury's Law and Grey's Anatomy, are a similar things.
So the lack of imagination is with regard to a current trend of naming shows. Are we going to see next "The Joy of Cooking" about a female chef named Susie Joy?

Its not like Breaking Bad is about a guy named Charles Bad. There can be a clever title and show that don't need to be tied together so obviously. Its like they had an idea for a show and then at the last second name the lead character a silly pun.

I give New Amsterdam a little more credit due to the way they are developing the character. He is an 'immortal' and it seems that when he creates a new identity the last name plays on the New York/Amsterdam theme. At least the last 2 identities of York and Amsterdam follow that line (we are still waiting to find out about other names he has used). Therefore, each incarnation/identity could be viewed as a "New" Amsterdam.
I know, it's a stretch...
