Recent studies show the Blue Ray technology has officially been chosen Over HD DVDs.
Which form of music storage and replay do you love the mostest?

Yes, I'm excited for spring training to get done and start the real season... Y'know it's been since 93 that we've had a title?
Oh, RAY..... nevermind.

My mother-in-law got me a Blu-Ray for Christmas. So far, I'm loving it, although I wish there were more titles out on Blu-Ray.
I'm just thankful my wife told my mother in law about Blu-Ray, not HD DVD.

Neither. DVD's will be dead as the dodo within 10 years. I'll stick to the cheaper "regular" ones in the meantime.

BluRay is primarily used for video storage. I haven't heard if they are going to try to use the medium as some sort of ultra high fidelity CD.

I think they won't make music Blu-Rays. When I started leasing my new car, it had a music DVD player in it which is great in providing 5.1 surround sound. But the library for music DVD's is really small, and I don't think it's caught on, primarily because of downloading songs has really killed CD's.

Yah, it's taking off as fast as super-audio cd!!
However, Blue-Ray does have major advantages in terms of storage over HD DVD so it seems that most companies are leaning that way in order to offer "better" extras that will set them apart from pirate copies online. We'll see, but it looks like it's Blue-Ray so far.

My DVD collection is massive. I'm not re-buying most of it AND getting a new player AND getting a new TV for a format that's not gonna last.

Well, I too have a very large DVD collection, so I won't be re-buying all the titles I have as BluRay, but I will likely buy the occasional title and rent. Also, I have a hi-def TV already. So, yeah, I would like to pick up a BluRay player sooner or later.

I'm in the same position. I will not be replacing all the old DVDs with Blu-ray dvds. But maybe a couple here and there, like The Matrix, Lord of the Rings.
And as new movies come out, I'll but Blu-Ray only. Though with kids, my buying of new movies is for the most part limited to Wiggles and Disney movies.

That's a much more sane approach, but to say you'll buy the old format bc "letterbox" tv screens are a fad, or hi-def won't last is whacky. I too have a huge dvd collection, and won't change everything over. However, anything new that is of the visually stimulating/graphic based movie, I will surely lean toward Blue-Ray as long as the price dif isn't crazy. Also, movies like Eli mentioned are the first type to be moved over.
It should be noted that most of the new blue-ray players also do a REALLY nice job upregulating the old dvd copies to a near hi-def level. Sure it's not 100%, especially in terms of sound for those with at least a 5.1 setup (7.1 here).

I'd still need to buy a new TV to "appreciate it," a TV which I generally can't afford any time soon.
And it's the disc format in general that is dying. I want a better TV eventually, but I prefer to wait until they figure out what's gonna work best with the next gen digital download that'll replace disc in a few years.

I bought a good (and much less expensive) upconversion player as a stopgap measure until it was clear who was winning the format war. I'm pretty happy with it. Upgrading isn't a high priority, so I'll probably wait to until the price of Blu-Ray players drops before getting one.

Aren't Blu-Ray players backwards compatible with regular DVDs?
If so, I'll gradually make the transition. DVDs are generally good enough in quality and convenient enough in format that it won't be like a VHS to DVD change over where suddenly every VHS in the world became useless.
I'll buy (and by 'buy', I mean burn from Netflix) regular DVDs for a while longer...eventually transition into Blu-Ray and start buying those, but hang on to my old DVDs if they're workable.

It's tough not to dive in when you see some movies on a big enough set; my jaw hit the floor when i saw The Fifth Element and 2001; like seeing a completely different movie, and the latter is 40 years old; and still, absurd detail and sharpness, and almost 3-D quality in long shots.
I'm guessing this will be best for the CGI heavy movies that focus on visuals, watching the sky turn dark with arrows in 300 rocks but other then Kubrick-like epics shot in that much detail I dont know how older movies will fare. Dirty Dozen is in blu-ray maybe it rocks but...
On the down side, other are right, this sucks, the idea of buying your movies, again, again. For close encounters I've owned the VHS, VHS Special Edition, Laserdisc, Laserdisc Criterion Collection, DVD, 2 disc Special Edition DVD, 4 disc Anniversary Box Set DVD, and now the Blu-Ray editions? Spielberg owes me.
And why can I get Lethal Weapon 4 but not Godfather and Alien/Aliens and the other biggies; how deep will this technology go b4 replaced. Ugh.
Oh yeah I read today about a display technology being tested that has 33 times the resolution of the highest hi-def quality available today. So rubes like me will keep Spielberg's and Lucas' GulfStreams gassed up.

I thought Blue Blockers were gonna catch like wild fire also..Twenty years later and they're still sitting in my garage in the box they came in, all two thousand pairs of 'em, along with eight crates of Member's Only jackets..I just wish the rest of the world had the same fashion sense I was blessed with..Hey, you think Sleeves would like a pair of sunglasses for his birthday?
Edit: Please don't ask me about my storage room full of Propiel Pocket Fishermen..It's kind of a sensitive topic for me..Thanks.

When i got my PS3 I got 5 free blu-ray movies and The Last Waltz was one of them. I really need to watch that. And there are a few concert blu-rays, the key word being few.

Here's the official press release (http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20080219005651/en)(also available here (http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2008_02/pr1903.htm)):

I hope the BluRay DVDs don't start edging out the "regular" DVDs, invariably leaving people forced to buy BluRay if they want the movie. I don't like being forced to assimilate.
I do however, have a T.V. with a DVD player and VHS player and it is the bestest thing ever because i can still watch the VHS of Sick of it All, Agnostic Front and the Gorilla Biscuits playing in NYC that Fluffernutter gave me about 4 years ago.

I don't have any data to back this up:
There are at least two reasons that won't happen (at least not soon) 1) I'm pretty sure that most people do not yet have an HDTV (I am afraid to find out how many own Blu Ray players that are not PS3s and think they are watching movies in High Def). 2) DVDs are selling very well.
I don't think the studios are going to drop DVDs while they are making money with them.

Honestly, I dont really see the difference is DVD vs. Blu-ray. It's not night and day like HD vs. regular TV. A good DVD player looks almost as good as a bluray disk. I'm not doing the full conversion any time soon.

Blue Ray can kiss the widest part of my butt.
How much of a difference you see depends on a lot of things. Older movies on blu-ray generally are not going to look much better just because of the source. It also depends on what kind of HD set you have. The jump from standard DVD to a blu-ray on a 720p is not as noticeable as the jump to a 1080p set. If you see some of Pixar's movies on a 1080p set you WILL see a difference.

The key will be backward compatibility.
They can put out both DVDs and Blu-Ray right now...eventually, some time in the next few years, they stop producing DVD versions of new movies.
Your DVD collection would still be able to work, so people won't fell like they're getting cheated out of a library, similar to people did with the switch from VHS to DVD, but if you want new releases, you're buying Blu-Ray.

The difference on my television (when it works) between a new movie on DVD or a new movie on blu ray or hd dvd is amazing.
If you have a large screen, there's a huge difference.
