In order to better discourage counterfeiters, the United States Bureau of Printing and Engraving has released a brand-new $5 bill into circulation, today (3/13/2008.)
Some of the new security features include dual watermarks, a shifted security band and the use of a large number "5" on the back of the bill ... printed in high-contrast PURPLE ink.
I've often said that US money is some of the most boring in the world, but I've since changed my opinion ... the new $10, $20 and $50 bills were prettier than past bills and reminded me of foreign currencies with all of their colors.
Read more about the new $5 bills ... and access a nifty interactive overview of the new features at the Bureau of Printing and Engraving's website. (http://www.moneyfactory.gov/newmoney/)
I like the design. However, I don't know why we use those embedded images you have to hold up to the light to see. For example, here's the Saudi Riyal. The left hand side has said image:

EDIT: OK, the new bills have such an image but it's not as prominent as in other currencies like the riyal.

I don't like the Euro much. But I like the currency used in Scotland.

I'd like some samples of the new bills the mint is making. You know to compare and match, like wallpaper swatches.
What, nothing?

www.moneyfactory.gov what a great site. Thanks. I just pissed away an hour there.
Poor Abe didn't make the watermark though. Too bad. Wonder why they put a big "5" where Abe's head should be.
