I currently live at my sisters house. Her, my niece and nephew live upstairs and I live in the downstairs apartment with my mother. My sister is losing the house since money has been an issue since her husband died over the summer.

I'm tired of living with people, it's been 27 years and I want to move out on my own. So they are all getting a place together and I'm finding one of my own. I don't want a roommate, so finding a place that's nice and I can afford seems to be harder than I imagined. boston.com sucks ass, but craigslist seems to have a lot of options, though I've heard weird things about them.

Utilities included is a huge must for me, I got raped by the oil industry this winter and don't even want to deal with it.

I'm just hoping I can find something nice soon.

What you're describing sounds like either a men's shelter or a camp site..Stay with Mom untill you get married..You are not gonna find what you're looking for anywhere above the Mason-Dixon line without loads of " King Pin " type sexual favors being involved..As a matter of fact, can I move in with you guys?

After living with a boyfriend for a few years, I am out on my own and it is the best thing I have ever done. I kept one of those change jars that I put change in nightly and used that as my couch fund and took anything anyone was willing to give me, start looking at yard sales now and start asking your friends for things they don't want. Who gives a fuck if your plates don't match, they will be your plates.
I am basically broke but I am doing it on my own, I just figure ways to save and turn down half the invites I get to things and I pull through.

There is nothing like siting on ur couch naked eating generic mac and cheese out of the pot, cause u live alone and no one is gonna say shit to you
if u lived closer I could give u a box of knives and forks and stuff

good luck:clap:

You can move up here with me. I'm looking for a new place to stay while I'm away from home at work. It'll cost us about $1100 - $1500 each a month for rent an utilities.

If you have a strong Boston accent I might be able to pick up $400 of your part every month, just on the enjoyment factor of having my own little Will Hunting in close proximity. It would make it worth the extra cost.

All I would like is that you ask me every morning when I head out for work "You going to Harvard"? And then when we are sitting after work watching a game drinking some beers (oh and you'd have to say "beers" alot too) and a nice goal is scored, you'd have to ask me "How you like them apples"?

Finding a "nice" place may be difficult if you are on a budget - trust me. The key is finding an acceptable place that can be "nice" with a little decoration. Of course you don't want anything dangerous, leaky, or really dirty, but you may need to look for something VERY basic.

And TRY not to get a place with electric heat - you will get raped worse than the oil company already did. Electric heat could be the worst thing ever.

It might be tough to find a place that has all utilities included, but if rent and what they DO cover is low enough, you can get away with paying a couple of bills on your own.

Best of luck Budday!

I agree with everything Matt ... well put.

Although, I did actually lucked out with Electric heat and I think it's a good thing in the right environment. My place was on the 3rd floor, so I got residual heat from downstairs, and there was a thermostat in every single room. I could leave the heat off in all the rooms all day, and ony turn on in the rooms I was in at the time. The Electric heat cranked up real fast, so I didn't have to leave it on long. I think my situation was not typical though because everyone else I know has horror stories about the cost.

Does Randy start EVERY sentence with "Big Ass 307, Buddays?" That's what I imagine anyway.

Hippo: So, Randy, how are things going at work?

Randy: Big Ass 307, Buddays! Pretty good. We just got a new shipment in and Jerry at the dock got everything unloaded in under an hour. Made for a sweet Friday.

Hippo: Wow, Jerry still works on the dock? I thought he and his wife moved to Arizona.

Randy: Big Ass 307, Buddays! Jerry's DAUGHTER moved to Arizona a couple of years ago, but he is still here. He DID take a leave of absence when his daughter had complications with her pregnancy, but Jerry and his wife came back after everything turned out OK. It was only a few weeks.

OK - maybe it's only funny to me...

Congratulations on making the move to be on your own for the first time. I also lived with my sister for about 6 years and while it was a great arrangement financially and a way to be somewhat independent, I also lost my mind a little bit because she is extremely difficult to be around (think of a voice that would put bagpipes to shame and the temper of rabid dog).
Now that I'm on my own I have the quiet I always wanted and a space that is truly my own. I look around my house and just see myself and my tastes all around me. I can also do whatever the fuck I want and that is worth being broke any day of the week.

Southie, Back Bay, Charlestown, Cambridge and some parts of Dorchester. Which is why it's harder for find a place for $1100.

Can you (or better yet, are you willing to) do East Boston? You get a lot for your money there. The only problem is you're living in East Boston.

I had a one bedroom in Southie for 3 years for $1100 a month, but that was right before it became a nice area. Now the prices are skyrocketing.

(livable) parts of Dorchester are still sort of cheap, but the prices there have been going up quickly in the last couple of years, as all the rich gays have moved from the South End to Dorchester (and Chelsea).

You can do Cambridge as a city employee? How big of a place are you looking for? Check around Kendall and Inman Squares. The enormous Cambridge prices haven't hit there as hard as everywhere else in Cambridge (although Inman is getting close).

But Craigslist will be your friend for this. Keep checking.

Oh right, probably can't do Cambridge.

I don't know much about East Boston, if the place was nice and the area didn't suck, maybe. I want a studio or 1 bedroom.

Dude. Trust me. You don't want a studio. I dropped well over a grand on a sofabed and dinette, just so when the ladies came over, it looked like a living room. That part worked out well and good. But if you want to make a burger, or have a pice of fish, your kitchen/living room/bedroom stinks!

Now that I think about it, I got more ass in that studio than I ever got. "N", "M","C","S";

Thank you all very much!

Definitely check out East Boston. What about Allston/Brighton?

The east side of Southie is still low(ish) in price. And parts of Chinatown still have pretty low prices.

I'd suggest JP or Roslindale, but the commute is fucking murder from those places.

Have you had no luck in Charlestown? Last time I actively looked for an apartment (which was like 5 years ago), they had semi-affordable prices there.

I lived in Fenway for a year and it was pretty cool living there. There's just a lot of really old apartments there. We couldn't control our heat, so we had to keep our windows open in the middle of the winter because it was so hot in the apartment. But hearing the games in my apartment was pretty fucking awesome. Parking on gamedays was not, however.

Back Bay is great, too. And its very close proximity to a lot of bars.

Good luck on your search.

Fallon, I gotta think that with all the college students in Boston there must be some affordable housing. Why not check college/university websites and newspapers for ads? When I first moved to DC, I found my place (where I lived for 8 years) via the Georgetown University off-campus housing site.

Yeah, but they're all wealthy universities filled with rich kids. Their parents will pay whatever they need to, so the college areas are sometimes the most expensive.

Not to mention that BC and BU have purchased so many of the apartment buildings that it completely drove up the prices everywhere else.

Oh, I understand that believe me. Georgetown ain't cheap and yet I found place for $500 a month for a one bedroom with a full-sized washer and dryer AND a parking spot in one of the most expensive parts of the city. My landlords were looking for a grad student/young professional who wasn't going to make a lot of noise or trash their place.

Point being is you never know what you may find on such sites.

I feel your pain. I've been looking for a place since my job became permanent last month. I think I finally may have found a decent, affordable place on Capitol Hill here in DC. And it's not even a crime-ridden neighborhood, as far as DC goes. I had to give up on looking for my own place, but I can probably handle one roommate. Definitely preferable to living in the burbs with family.

Good luck!

Yeah, you have a good point. My buddy owns two properties in Cambridge and rents them for waaaaay below market value just so he can choose who lives there. He also has his tenants paypal him their rent, which is awesome, but that's another story.

So my quest to find an apartment continues.

I found a place in Eastern Market (pretty nice, cool neighborhood in DC) 1BR for $1000/month. It's a nice place and good price for that area.

I was the 2nd person to look at it and the first person took it, but her application was rejected. I got a call from the tenant who wants me to pay half of her $500 fee for breaking her lease. She doesn't want to sublease since she is moving out of state and it would still be in her name. I like the place, and $250 is no big deal, but I'm balking, more out of principal. Am I stupid, should I just pay this c the $250 and get the place?

Eastern Market isn't bad and that price is pretty good. I used to live on Capitol Hill for a while after college (3rd and E, SE) and the renovation of that part of town was just beginning. I imagine it's much nicer now than it was 15 years ago.

Personally, I'm happier in VA than in DC. Have you looked in the RosslynClarendon/Ballston areas of VA or are you set on living in DC?

I work in Rosslyn, so I have looked in North Arlington. I don't really like Rosslyn. Clarendon and Ballston are ok and close to work, but I prefer DC. Might as well enjoy the city while I'm (relatively) young. I spend most of my time there anyway. I will definitely go for Clarendon, or possibly Ballston, if I find the right place. It is slightly more affordable than DC, but not that much.

I'd balk the 250. The lease breaking is her problem, not yours. If you aren't in a rush to move, I'd call her, tell her you found another prospective place and the only thing keeping you from taking her place over the other one would be the $250. If she takes off the $250, take the apt. If she doesn't, say you're sorry, but it's a comparitive deal breaker for you and look for another place.
