is it possible to spring a leak in the atmosphere?
i mean, what if the shuttle pierces it and all of our O2 leaks out?

is this possible?

what if we built a 150 mile high smokestack?
would our air leak out into the vacuum nothingness of space?

i know there is a *mega-maid* and *perrie-air* joke coming, but im serious.

i think our good friend gravity keeps the atmosphere in place

If you are thinking in terms of "piercing the atmosphere," think of the Earth as a giant tire with leak sealant in it.

http://www.helmetheadcyclegear.com/Images/eShop/product/Nichols/slime/3_bottles.jpg

When something pierces the atmosphere, the rest of the atmosphere rushes in behind to seal the leak.

If you created a giant tower, it would be like having a nail in your tire. Your tire doesn't lose air because the nail is still plugging the hole. But when the nail is pulled, the leak sealant comes into play automatically sealing the hole.

Don't worry Champ - everything will still be here when you wake up in the morning.

That's a good layman's terms explanation. You would make a good schoolteacher.

what if you open the hatch at the bottom of the tower?

what if you open the hatch at the bottom of the tower?

Well, then the world is doomed.

Air pressure would keep the atmosphere from being sucked out of the top of the tower. The same things that keep the atmosphere in place now will keep the air in the tower, no matter how high you build it.

You could conceivably add a pump at the top of the tower that would vent atmosphere into space, but then you would just be a Blofeld-ian douchebag.

I was for a while.

However, the lack of educational initiative I faced on a daily basis soured me on teaching. When you have a bunch of college Freshmen sitting in a class only because the HAVE to be there, it gets really old really quickly.

But it's not all the fault of the kids. I just couldn't keep doing the minstrel show I had to do to keep them entertained day after day.

Theres no nail and no sealant because theres no hole to seal

Gravity and that alone keeps the atmosphere in place; air pressure has nada in this.

Air is a fluid; something moving through water [another fluid] leaves no hole to seal.

Any giant structure pierces nothing, no hole, no plug needed, build a giant tower in the ocean so it sticks out; there is no danger of the ocean going anywhere; out the top or out the bottom. The tower sits there, benign.

Re-reading my replay I sound like I'm taking a Cleaveland Steamer on Mad Matts explanation. Its not wrong; I just prefer to not use analogies only coz my students seem to only remember the analogy and not what it was referring to.

In case Earth stops spinning, what wall should I cover with mattresses to soften the blow? North, South, East, West?

your thinking is incorrect. This is a problem which features longitudes and, to a limited effect, latitudes.

That still doesn't explain what wall I should line with mattresses.

eastern wall. sun rises in east because that's the direction the earth spins. stop the earth and you fly forward (east). i doubt mattresses would help.

What if it's a tempurpedic mattress?

Turn it sideways, fold it in half and place in the corner. Cushion two walls at the same time.
