I know, I cant believe it either. I'm not a regular listener, but Ive listened often enough to know he's not the funny one. He steers the show, and lets the comedians do the comedy... although sometimes he tries to join in and just falls flat. (Much more than a board op, I know I know...just sayin). Anthony, Jimmy and whatever visiting comic usually just simply outweigh him in the funny dept.

But today, with just a little throwout line, he made me laugh the most I have all day.

They were playing those god-awful "Governor Patterson reaches out to the community" bits, and they were tanking as they were supposed to... they played one where after a lonnng walk into the street, the Governor gets hit by a car. After a few beats, Opie says, "Oh I think I got this one...the governor was crossing the street, and he was hit by a car because he's black."

It wasnt exactly WHAT he said, but the timing. I...laughed...at Opie! A first for me... and it seemed the studio was impressed as well.

I know I'll get a few responses from the pests (sos) that Opie is just as funny as everyone else on the show...I'm just saying Ive never heard it until today. Perhaps this is just the beginning.

Opie has been very very funny for quite a while now, so its not really surprising.

Same basic punchline although it was implied, he said that when that black girl on the school bus shit herself, everyone thought she was melting.

Said it ad nauseum, I dont get the 'hes not funny' thing some feel; I mean hes next to Ant and Jimmy, thats some tough competition, but he can throw out a lot of good lines.

Today I heard, I have no idea when so beats me if it was live or best of; anyway he was desribing what it was like to do mico market radio; amd he was doing this 'thinking out loud' while back at *that* station

...'Oh gee, I can talk here and give the time and temp and seg the next song that should last five seconds what a thrill...'

and a bunch of stuff that, if I write it, sucks, but he NAILED, i mean NAILED the shittiness of mico market radio, coz I'm not famous at all but I like him was doing that shit since the mid 1980s; sitting in closets with turntables and cart machines and an exact clock you had to stick to and you had Zero Creativity and he mentioned people going to school for this; seriously, anybody can do it. Anyone. Radio is not a talent at that level, its a joke. You arent allowed to be talented. It's shunned.

And the vast majority of stations have exactly the formatics he describes.

Fucking rambling here, but he killed, he nailed it, I was like a Hyena. Fucking Hilarious.

Most of the time when Op makes the comment "I think I got this one" he usually has a pretty clever/funny line that makes me laugh. He picks his spots well in that regard.

I forget the story, but they were talking about something in the news that involved a severed head. Opie said "there was a casket, and a lil' old hat box" at the funeral. For me, one of his best lines ever.

He is a streaky shooter.

Every now and then he will get off a great line but his cringe worthy unfunny comments and his fake laugh at what he just said stick with ya. In fact Anthony has been doing that of late. He has to have his microphone louder than everyone elses to help his ego so when he says one of his racist, and completely unfunny lines, he does that fake "hehehehe," which I find much more annoying than Opie's MO.

Opie has gotten better of late but I think it might be because Ant has gotten worse.

I think it was a few weeks ago I heard Opie declare " I'm ready for radio to be fun again" not word for word, but a proclamation nonetheless.

Since then, I've noticed a marked comedic increase on his end. Opie a few months ago would have never mentioned, let alone pulled off, baby diaper moustache. Haters will say it's desperation from losing markets. I say shut up and enjoy it.

Yes, I'd say that's about right. Opie's a bull and Ant is a bear right now, their comedy moves in cycles with them it seems.

When opie does get a line off it's even funnier because it suddenly hits you and you realize you're laughing at something opie said.

I agree with you. For awhile it seemed like he was going for the over-the-top comments, and just lobbing them out there. But he's been killing late and I think it's because we all expect him to get the easy layup and he's been slipping in unexpected goodness.

I like Opie; he's not the funniest, but as Mike said he's got some tough competition around. I don't think I've laughed harder at anything he's ever said than I did yesterday when he threw out the 'dick in the ass' line on FM.
I still giggle..... see, I'm giggling right now as I'm thinking of it.

I have noticed Opie getting more lines in for the last fer weeks. I think it started happening when they were teasing the Anthony/Melinda breakup. I don't really think Anthony has become less funny though. Opie has just stepped up.

Maybe he has just used XM's money to hire a few more writers for himself.

I will admit I am a BIG fan of the show....But here lately(Ive listened now for about 2 and a half years)..They have been doing the best radio Ive ever heard...It seems they are just happy, and on some kind of entertaining streak...I hate to use the word chemistry..But for me the past 6 months O&A&lil Jimmy have made me belly laugh almost every day......Opie not so much, but he sure plays a big part in the whole show......When you like a show so much you drive slow so you can listen more... And hope you catch a red light before ya get home..Thats sick :bye:

Opie has always been funny but how people interpreted Opie's funniness depends on each person's individual perspective.

I'm far from a "kool-aid drinker", but it actually is like thay say.
People listen and think they know how the show works.

They don't realize how easily the show turns into a clusterfuck when he's not there.

Just look at the second time Al Jourgensen was in. Op had to leave to go watch Tiger Woods plat golf, and after he left the show was pandemonium.

And while he's not the "funny one" on the show, where are guys going to get their ammo from, if he's not there????

Best point gaurd in the game, that chap.:smoke:

Opie and Fez are in similar boats if you ask me.

They both are on radio with 2 guys who are constantly blasting home run after home run. So their job can be just as important sometimes but it's not as obvious because we're at home.

They are an equal team for a reason and we don't know all the facts.

ChrisTheCop

ew.

how dare you sir.

Fez is an incredibly funny man.
He does not have the reputation that Opie has of being unfunny at all.

Fez could be funny on his own. Opie could not.

Opie's the funniest part of that show now. Jimmy's stuck with the same material, and Anthony just pisses me off lately. He's not even trying to do clever racial humor now: it's just raw, unadorned racial hatred.

i don't think it's real hatred. i think it's exaggerated dislike, seeing how far he can push it without getting fired. it's destructive behavior for sure, but i think there's more self hate than anything else.

but it's funny.

actually, it's not how far without getting fired, more like UNTIL he gets fired

I used to think there was to much Jimmy but lately its interersting to hear him because he seems to be evolving as a person, Ant seems to be Devolving and its equally interesting . Opie is the rudder of the ship, I like him.

The fucking Hat Removal is so brutal that I am embarrased to admit that I laugh real hard at Jimmy's play by play. Taking a clip that is infuriating and twisting it into the surreal
hat removal ceremony shows a wonderfully twisted thought process.

Yeah it's like how Anthony is pretending to be a Nazi. He exaggerates it quite a bit. Sometimes it's just plain unfunny, but that's what happens when you say the same kind of joke 16,475 times in a year.
