I was wondering if anyone here Twittered. After hearing about it for months, I decided to sign up and try it out. Anyone else twittering or subscribing to twitter feeds?

you post little notes and status updates and it goes out to people who are "subscribed" to your feed. It's big with the technoratti for getting information out there, or conversing among other twitterers.

The thing is (I think) with Twitter is that it only is useful if everyone else you know is on Twitter. Then it becomes more useful than IM, I feel like I am out of the age of people who would use it. If I was in college this might be cool, everyone would be on it and if someone was somewhere they could send a quick message that said 'In student center, meet up for food' and everyone they know would get the thing and everyone could migrate there.

Or if everyone on RF.net (and every other board) were following each other or on some kind of group something, you could be at a party in the city and as it was winding down or if people were scattered at a couple different parties people could start Twittering about where they were going to go next and everyone could move to the same place to keep things going.

But as it is now I used this thing about half a dozen times last year and never found any good use for it besides posting from the can that I was taking a dump. No one I know uses it and even if they did I doubt anyone would really ever care about it.

I guess it would be cool if I was in the city on some summer night and checked Twitter to see that people were posting looking to meet up somewhere and a flash party formed, say everyone was in the area and then Mikeyboy or JustJon posts something like 'Going to Loreley for beer'. People could see that and respond with 'Meeting up at Loreley' and things would spin from there, next thing you know you have an impromptu party at a German bar and everyone there. But this would only work if more than 4 people you know use it.

You can have it text directly to the phone, you don't need aim for that.

I've been following the boobsie/poots people. It is really useful at a loud bar to talk shit or communicate drink orders to people without having to pay for text messages on your phone, especially if your blackberry won't run aim for some reason.

I sort of have this too. Most of my friends don't have access to a computer or the internet during the work day, and who am I supposed to twitter with? The 55 year old accounts payable lady who sits across the cube aisle from me? I sort of vaguely like the idea of it, but I don't have the preexisting network of people who have all bought into it and are waiting there to communicate with me or care about whatever thing I'm twittering about. I think I missed this boat on this one.

On a related note, I've missed a lot of boats. I also missed the college-age drug experimentation phase that later gets written off as youthful indiscretion, and have never smoked pot or anything. I'm too old and entrenched in corporate America to try now.

Speaking of drugs, the 55 year old lady across the cube aisle from me told me a few weeks ago that she still likes to trip on LSD sometimes, and I wasn't really expecting that either. So maybe she DOES like to twitter and she just hasn't told me yet.

I think it's interesting the way people converse on it. It's a way to keep up with what's going on in the world at any given moment, and see what different people think about different things.

You can define your own columns to only show messages from specific people too.

You can sent tweets via text messages, but you won't be able to see other people's tweets. You're better off loading an app on your phone to do it. If you have a blackberry, twitterberry is great.
