The players are doing this in support of the coaches and staff who are getting screwed over. I think it's a nice gesture on the part of the players.

Obama didn't want to "dialogue" about Imus, he wanted him fired...
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/s...3031317&page=1
"I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus," Obama told ABC News, "but I would also say that there's nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude."
Obama said he appeared once on Imus' show two years ago, and "I have no intention of returning."
"He didn't just cross the line," Obama said. "He fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America

The same thing could be said about the "my best friends are black" statement. Both statements are defensive statements used to try to be proof that the speaker's comments can't be racist because the speaker has black friends or would vote for a black candidate.
Now that doesn't mean that their other statements are racist. They may or may not be. But often they are.

Not true. On a societal level what you say makes sense but to say a black person can't be racist because he's black? That sounds racist in and of itself.

Sure I think bigot is a good word for what I was saying. But to say "reverse racism" is ridiculous...it can't happen. Bigotry , like you said, seems to be closer to the everyday individual vs individual.
For centuries whites wanted blacks to "assimulate" to their culture...that frction alone continues to this day.

but when people accuse them of being racist or not voting for a black candidate based on race, what other thing can they say?
Defend the statement itself and explain why it's not racist. Say that the reason you wouldn't vote for Obama has nothing to do with his color, but his positions. You can even turn it on the person and ask them if they believe it's possible for people to not vote for Obama without being racist. If they say no, then they are showing who the idiot is.
The other stuff isn't a good defense anyway. Saying you'd vote for Condi Rice is a completely hollow comment. Condi Rice isn't the republican candidate, so it's not like the person could even prove their statement.
Same with saying your best friends are black. How is that a good defense? It's not like a person can't say a racist thing or be racist if their friends/acquaintances are black.
Ron clearly has black friend, but admitted on the show that he does have racist thoughts every now and then (about the black college students). I'm no different.

One more point. Both statements are so defensive (especially when offered before a listener accuses the speaker of racism), it makes the speaker look guilty.
Being overly defensive is something I'm always aware of when making/writing legal arguments, etc. because it may give the impression that we think something is wrong with our position.

no doubt Mike the Teacher is smart (he is, after all, a teacher) but that dont make him (or anyone else who is smart) infallible. I just find his amazement that 6/10 people "still believe in God" to be a trite, convenient and pompous reaction.
I'm still confused about your problem with Mike the Teacher. You don't like the fact that he's surprised that so many people still believe in god?

I agree with you on everything except the term "likely would not" - I would say "may not."
There is a great chance that life would be in a completely different form - it completely depends upon the environment and what the creature would need to survive.
There is a good chance that the creature will not be carbon-based because there are so many other possibilities available. However, there is still a possibility that they will be carbon based because we know that option "works."
