Directed by Peter Berg- who always seems like a servicible director, but not great. My biggest concearn would be that since he just made an Iraq movie he would try and play up the allegorical aspect of the book.
It would be nice if someone could take the plot clarity of the miniseries and marry it to the superior production of the Lynch version.
also Dune >>>>>>>>>>> Starwars

This is exactly what I am looking for, but they are going to have to get a really good screenplay adaptation and have a solid effects budget for this to fly. I am trepid but hopeful.
I wonder if they are going to hand out a glossary of terms like they did for the screenings of the David Lynch movie?

Dune has already been made by the sci-fi channel. two movies. The first with John Hurt in my opinion was way better than the Lynch mess... because the scif-fi movie was so close to the book compared to the original Dune.
EDIT - I guess thats the mini-series you mentioned...
I really hope they get this remake right; Dune is such a kick-ass book!

Refuse to watch any Dune remakes without Patrick Stewart.

They definately are going to need a really daring script to deal with the ammount of stuff that happen internally. They also just cut so much out because it's not as important to the immediate conflict, but that stuff enriches the mythology so much.
I also hope they deal with Jessica and the Bene Gesserit a little better- she's really helpless in the movie and the miniseries but I always read her as fairly intimidating.

It was actually pretty good - if you liked the books. It was a lot closer to the source material than the Lynch movie.
However, David Lynch's Dune was a lot more cinematic and sweeping. IMO very well done for a "Hollywood version."

I liked the miniseries a lot.
I don't think that book can be done properly as a movie.
Then again, I thought the same thing about each of the Lord of the Rings books.

This thing is going to be an empty calorie abomination full of extra shit-astic-ness..
Peter Berg.. an episode of friday night lights? oh, and chicago hope?..
Hancock (2008) (post-production)
The Kingdom (2007)
"Friday Night Lights" (1 episode, 2006)
The Rundown (2003)
"Wonderland" (1 episode, 2000)
Very Bad Things (1998)
"Chicago Hope" (1994) TV series (unknown episodes)
Dune is going to be the giant worm in the toilet. They should just stop.

Um, he directed the movie "Friday Night Lights" as well as writing the screenplay to that, developing the tv shows Friday Night Lights and Wonderland, and writing and directing Very Bad Things.
I'm not saying that's the greatest director ever, but he's got more experience than you give him credit .

yeah I wouldn't say peter berg is shit, he's servicible. The Rundown wasn't bad and Friday Night Lights is probably his big jewel. It's not like Uwe Bolls' Dune
he was on dinner for 5 and he seems fairly principled

Agreed. And for some reason, I like the guy, mostly as an actor. I really don't know why.

Exactly :smoke:
I can't say that it is a good or bad movie, but it got some pretty good critical reviews and box office success, I believe.
EDIT: My memory says it was critically well-received, but it got a 38% rating on RottenTomatoes, so maybe I'm wrong.

Oh, DUNE....... sorry.
No really, I'm sorry for that one. If there were a hell, I'd be going there for that one.

I reread Dune recently. It really is a bit too much for a movie and a mini-series will never get the money to make it work. I would think an actual series on HBO or Showtime would work. Just get the BBC to do it and when it only lasts 12 episodes people will accept that. We don't call it a mini and maybe it gets some good cash behind it.
Having recently gone through the book again, I can understand the concern one might have for it becoming a bit too much of a movie-of-the-times. Then again, if done well, it could make it that much more powerful. A story worth telling on it's own given slightly more weight due to the current war. Provided it's not too overt...we shall see.

Don't be. Even though I can't stand her, I've always admired her rack.
