Im serious. Between the offense and defense coordinators, special teams coordinators, coaches from "upstairs" reviewing plays and telling the coach to throw the challange flag, are NFL coaches really needed? I'm not a huge NFL guy, it's just my observation from watching lots of football games this years. I see coaches as really talking points for sport shows and such....meaning like, "Boy, Bill Bilechek is crazy and mad, huh"...kinda talking points.

I think just like anything else at times they get too much credit and at times they take too much blame.

There is a definite skill involved in head coaching. You need someone who supervises everything. Head coaches that don't have control of their staff usually don't succeed. Head coaches that are great a delegating and run a tight ship are successful like Belichek. Head coaches might not be doing a whole lot of actual coaching, just like head chefs don't do all of the cooking. But the position is needed and its obvious when you have bad head coaches, I would know the difference between good ones and bad ones being a Skins fan.

There needs to be a HNIC...decisions on offense affect the defense, special teams plays affect the offense, and so on. If there wasn't a head coach to make the final call all of these coordinators would be at each other's throats.

true... it takes a combo of coaches and players to win it all. Chuck Noll is a perfect example, he had a dynasty and then went 20 years or so without winning another

I think out of any coach in any sport, NFL coaches are the most important. The good NFL coaches are responsible for taking everything anyone is saying around them and putting it onto the field.

I'd say baseball but close second with football.

Really? I think baseball coaches are only relevant because of how much damage they can do to the game. They have no positive relevance what so ever.

Daily lineups based on opposing pitchers, resting players because of the long season, dealing with hitting slumps, pitcher maintnance over the season, pinch hitters, pinch runners, relievers, not to mention they are involved in trade talks as just a few things. Baseball managers are very important to the game.

All of those stats can be fed into a computer and have an output sent out, managers not really as relevant

1st and 3rd base coaches have more input in the game then the manager, just like the O and D coords have more impact on a football game then the head coach

you dont think that putting a certain guy in a certain time and it works out, positive ???

or pulling a reliever at the right time ???

or maybe deciding when to do an hit and run ??

So because the head coach has subordinates handling delegated responsibilities the head coach is irrelevant?

You could use the same rationale to say that Presidents, Governors, Mayors, CEO's, etc. are all irrelevant.
