he played for the white sox but quit when he realized he could make more money selling sporting goods and promoting baseball than playing it. not only did he make baseballs as part of his sporting goods empire but he invented branding by paying major league baseball one dollar for every dozen balls sold in order to be able to stamp the boxes and advertisements as "the official ball of major league baseball". he also paid baseball to exclusively use his balls for play in all major league games. dave was kinda right but not really at the same time.
