The 39th New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (aka Jazzfest) runs this year from April 25th through May 4th.
Highlights this year include: Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw, Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Santana, Jimmy Buffet, OAR, The Raconteurs, The Neville Brothers, Al Green, Randy Newman, Dr. John, Widespread Panic, Ozomatli, Galactic, Ellis Marsalis, Buckwheat Zydeco, Tab Benoit, Patti Austin, Papa Grows Funk, The Roots, Diana Krall, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Bobby McFerrin & Chick Corea, the subdudes, Keb Mo, Derek Trucks Band, etc., etc.
If you've never been to Jazzfest before, I HIGHLY recommend it. This year will be my 6th. It really is a flat out great experience. 11 stages of music of all kinds- jazz, blues, rock, country, zydeco, funk, bluegrass, gospel, R&B. Definitely something for everyone and a great way to check out stuff you've never heard of before. Plus, the fest ends at 7 each day, giving you a chance to check out Nawlins great restaurants, plus more live bands all over the city.
Plus, the food! Oh my. Not a hot dog or piece of pizza to be found. Jazzfest invites dozens of local restaurants and cooks to offer their cajun, creole, and southern creations to hungry fest goers. Honestly, it's as big a deal as the music- crawfish, jambalaya, gumbo, etouffee, gator, po-boys, oysters, crabs, pralines, sweet potatoes, jerk chicken, and ribs- just to start.
New Orleans is a great place to visit. The people are very friendly and make you feel at home. Plus, you can't beat the food and music. And it's a more laid back type of event as compared to Mardi Gras. And of course, they can really use the tourist dollars.
